Vouvant - one of France's most beautiful villages

All over France, there are villages which proudly carry the title of being among the most beautiful in the country. Always worth a visit, these villages rarely disappoint, and Vouvant is one of them. Set amid the verdant countryside of the Vendée department, not far from the Atlantic coast with its islands and resorts, Vouvant oozes charm and authenticity, and is high on the list of the most desirable places to seek a property.

Historical buildings to explore

Vouvant is intensely pretty, with its idyllic location on a bend in the lazily flowing River Mere, and its historical buildings that include the Melusine Tower and ancient ramparts, an 11th century church and quaint little streets lined with pretty artists cottages and ateliers (workshops). And although the village is small, there are a few shops, bars and cafés. A wonderful mediaeval festival is held every July and August.

Well kept and colourful

Apart from in high summer when it can become a little busy, Vouvant suffers less from the over touristy nature of some of the local beautiful towns and villages, so parking and other everyday activities for residents are not really a problem. The residents clearly take great pride in their village, as everything is beautifully presented and maintained, with colourful shutters and window boxes decorating the houses.

Visit fascinating Fontenay le Comte

Getting out and about to explore the surrounding area will almost certainly take you to Fontenay le Comte, a well known "beautiful town". Fontenay le Comte has masses of architectural heritage to explore, and its fascinating layout of three concentric circles is bound to intrigue anyone with an interest in old town planning. There is a lot to see here, so allow a full day in order to get the most out of a visit.

Enjoy the Marais Poitevin marshes and the coast

The Vendée is an unusually rich area in terms of natural attributes and features, so you can enjoy the various delights of the Marais Poitevin marshes (also known as the Green Venice of France), deep, cool pine forests, as well as the sandy beaches, fishing villages and seaside resorts of the coast.

Go horse-riding or try sand yachting

Many different sports and activities are on offer in Vouvant and its environs, so whether you like the idea of going horse-riding, walking or cycling in the countryside, playing golf or tennis, swimming in the sea or even sand yachting or surfing, you will find something to keep you busy here.

How to get there

Air travel will get you to La Rochelle, Nantes or Poitiers. La Rochelle is served by Flybe, easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair; Nantes by Ryanair, Air France, easyJet and Flybe; and Poitiers by Ryanair. Meanwhile rail travel by TGV offers the options of arriving at La Rochelle, Angers, Nantes or Poitiers. If you don't mind a long journey, coach travel is also a reasonably priced way of accessing the locality, or you can take to the wheel and drive yourself there, finding the village close to the A83 auto route, on the D30/31 roads.

Property prices and availability in and around Vouvant

Vouvant itself tends to be a little pricier than most of the surrounding villages, as it is highly sought after, and it isn't often that property in the village comes up for sale. However, the properties currently on the market in or near to the village are of excellent quality and not unreasonably priced, with the possibility, for example, to purchase a lovely, renovated three bedroom town house at just 135,000 Euros, or a super country house with a plot of land around it for 125,000 Euros. There is a little decorative work to do on the latter, but it is still exceptional value for money.
