If your idea of a perfect location is a calm, peaceful village in rural France, this one just might be for you. Vernantes is just such a village, yet one which offers good local amenities. And, it's set in a lovely location, close to the historic town of Saumur and within an easy drive of attractions such as lakes with water sports and beaches, chateaux and monuments, the beautiful River Loire and numerous golf courses.
Vernantes is just a small, rural village, but it has excellent basic amenities that make life sweet for its residents and visitors. There's a butcher's, a baker's, a post office, pharmacies and even a couple of restaurants and bars for relaxation and enjoyment. A small supermarket is situated just out of town, where most of life's necessities can be found.
Vernantes's old church still looks like a typical old village church, but has now changed its duties from ecclesiastical to civic. The church is now the Mairie, that most vital place in the life of any French village. It's also been a classified historical monument since 1964. Vernantes also has an interesting castle, dating from the 17th century. There was once an older castle in the village, but sadly nothing of this remains. The newer chateau, however, has its tales to tell. It was pressed into action as a home and operations centre for the German military during the Second World War, and later became a home for adults and children with disabilities. Further heritage worth discovering includes the Cistercian Abbaye de Louroux, which is located on the road from Vernantes to Saumur.
The Pays de la Loire is so rich in fascinating places to visit that you will be spoiled for choice when organising days out. This is the land of chateaux, and if this is your bag then you really have landed in the right place. Many are open to visitors, or offer guided tours in season. The cities of Angers and Tours are both rich in heritage and also excellent for cultural venues and shopping.
Saumur is the closest significant town of interest to Vernantes, and one not to be missed. It has a long history and a vast heritage to explore. Half-timbered houses vie for your interest with the great castle and important churches. Then there is the French National Riding School, acclaimed throughout the world, where you can watch spectacular shows of horsemanship by the crack team of the Cadre Noir, and also enjoy a tour of the stables and the biggest covered riding arena in Europe.
Finally, when you're done with all the cultural and historical stuff, and have eaten your way through all the local specialities and maybe over indulged on the excellent regional wines, you may feel that a little sporting activity is in order. Near to Vernantes there are six good golf courses, so fans of the game will be fully occupied. The countryside is idyllic, with lovely walking, cycling and horse-riding trails, and there are lakes and rivers too for swimming and water sports.
Angers and Tours both offer airports and railway stations making travel simple. If you're driving to Vernantes you'll find it on the D767/D58, not far from the A85 motorway.
Vernantes and its environs offer a good variety of properties for an equally good variety of prices. It goes without saying, this close to Saumur, that it's also a great location for equestrian properties. The grazing in this part of France is perfect for horses, and there are many events and competitions held locally. Whether you're looking for a small farmhouse with a surprisingly low price tag of just 82,000 Euros, or a fabulous country residence for just under 400,000 Euros, Vernantes is certainly worth considering.
