A mediaeval gem

The mediaeval town of Mougins is found in the south-east of France in the Alpes-Maritimes department, close to the tiny principality of Monaco. It's a real gem in the sparkling treasure trove of the Côte d'Azur. Surrounded as it is by the lovely Parc de la Valmasque with its 1,232 acres of forest, the town sits atop a hilly perch and looks down onto a panorama of exceptional natural beauty and colour.

Breathtaking views

From the green of the pine trees to the blue of the sea in the Baie de Cannes, the views from the top of the town are quite simply breathtaking. Add to this the perfection of the exquisite mediaeval town itself, and it is hardly surprising that the talented and creative have flocked here for years to gain inspiration and creative energy.

Oozing charm

The town has a mediaeval charm that oozes from every corner, from every narrow street and from every flower filled window box which graces many of the ancient houses. Mougins seems to be the town with everything; a town where sparkling fountains play in ancient squares, where history lives in the sun-baked stones and where life goes on much as it has for centuries. Yet there is another side to Mougins. Even on a short visit to the town you become aware that there is a vibrant modern life in the town as well as an authentic history.

A British enclave

There are a good number of British people in and around Mougins, attracted not just by the beauty of the town and its environs but also by the hi-technology centres of industry close to the town. With this influx of foreigners has come a British school, where children can be educated in the British system right up to A Levels, and also a massive leisure industry including two superb golf courses.

What to do in Mougins

There is so much to do in and around Mougins that it is hard to know where to start. Just doing nothing in this lovely place is a pleasure in itself! However, if you want to take in a little culture you may wish to visit one of the museums or art galleries (of which there are many) and perhaps see for yourself some of the work which has found its inspiration in this town. You can see Picasso's last home (the great artist spent the last twelve years of his life here), which is close to the Chapelle Notre Dame de la Vie, with its beautiful gardens all around. Browse the little shops for gifts, and enjoy particularly the excellent arts and crafts which are on sale here. There is also a photography museum, and an automobile museum to keep you entertained.

Dining in style

If you enjoy dining in real style, then Mougins could well feel like paradise to you. The town is the home of many fine restaurants, the most famous of which is the Moulin de Mougins, the flagship restaurant of the top chef Roger Verge. This is arguably one of France's very best restaurants, so expect to pay for the privilege of eating there, and don't forget to book well in advance!

Plenty of choice for the budget conscious

If you don't want to pay top prices every night there is still plenty of choice for you, and Roger Verge has another less exclusive but still excellent restaurant in the centre of the town too. You can eat at a different restaurant for a long time without needing to repeat the venue, as the town has over 40 to choose from!

Out and about

From Mougins you can enjoy many different places and sporting or leisure activities. The Mediterranean Sea is nearby, and you can also find tennis, golf, and squash to help work off all those restaurant dinners! Take a trip to Monaco, or nip into nearby Cannes... if the film festival is on then you may spot a star or ten!

How to get there

Flying to Nice airport is an ideal way to arrive at your destination from the UK. The airport is served by a number of airlines offering direct flights, so you can choose from British Airways, Air France, Aer Lingus, bmibaby, bmi, easyJet, flybe or Jet2. If you prefer to travel by train, the fast TGV network will get you to Marseille, from where you can connect to Nice. And if driving is your thing, Mougins is close to the A8 motorway.

Property prices and availability in and around Mougins

It all depends on what you have in the bank... there are some superb properties in and around the town, but they come at Riviera prices. There is no escaping it, properties in the Riviera, particularly in such beautiful places as Mougins, are expensive with a capital E. It's worth looking though... sometimes apartments in new developments can be more reasonable than you might expect. The rental market is strong throughout the year, so if you aren't planning to live in Mougins all year round, you could recoup a considerable amount of money in this way.
