St Laurent du Var - a Riviera town

The town of St Laurent du Var is found in a highly privileged position in the sunny south-east of France, amidst the sophistication and glamour of the Riviera. Technically a suburb of Nice, St Laurent is in fact an old town with a history rather than just an overspill of the city. It lies on the banks of the River Var, just where it makes its connection to the Mediterranean Sea, and was once a very important river port. Today you can still find a lovely 11th century church, the Chapelle St Jeanne d'Arc. St Laurent du Var's motto is "Digo li que vengon" which translates to "Tell them to come!" and sums up the attraction of the town perfectly.

Colourful and lively

St Laurent du Var is as colourful and lively as any other Riviera town in the summer, and there are many activities and festivities to keep you entertained. The Marina is always pretty, with its pleasure craft and buzzy atmosphere, and there are some great seaside and riverside walks. Shopping is a very popular pastime here, and the wealthy residents and tourists have provided the necessary demand for a good supply of excellent shops. The town's pebble beaches are pretty and clean, and the Med is almost always blue, warm and welcoming!

St Laurent du Var's pleasures of the day...

St Laurent du Var is well equipped to supply you with pleasurable experiences each and every day. For a start, almost every spring, summer and autumn day begins with the sunshine pouring in through the window... and even a good number of winter days begin this way too! The Sunday morning market is a delight. Redolent of all the scents and colours of the Med, it positively insists that you get out of bed and arrive in time to watch the fascinating spectacle of the stall holder setting out their wares while catching up on all the local gossip. If it's culture that you want, there is a cultural centre that hosts plenty of exhibitions, and for nature lovers there is a bird zoo full of fascinating species.

Activities on offer

There are lots of sports you can try here too, with the sea and the river offering all manner of water sports and the town also having access to boules, tennis, horse-riding and more. And just in case you are still there in the winter, as many are who cannot bring themselves to leave, don't forget that the ski slopes of the Alps are less than two hours away!

St Laurent du Var's pleasures of the night!

If that sounds a little risqué, please forgive me... it is just that St Laurent and its near neighbour of Nice offer so much in the way of night life that the title seems apt! Whatever your chosen way of spending an evening you will find it available to you here. There are restaurants offering every conceivable cuisine, occasional festivals with street parties and exhibitions, sophisticated nightclubs and casinos or small and friendly karaoke parties in the little piano bars that litter the waterfront. Star spotters only need to head for Cannes when the famous film festival is on, or to the tiny principality of Monaco, which is right on the doorstep.

How to get there

It is so easy to get to St Laurent du Var from the UK, as Nice airport is five minutes from the town! Nice is served by British Airways, Air France, bmibaby, easyJet, bmi, Jet2, flybe and Aer Lingus. Another big plus point for travellers is that there is a station in St Laurent too, making train travel another option. The A8 auto route will get you close to your destination if you choose to make the journey by road.

Property prices and availability in and around St Laurent du Var

The Riviera is one of the most expensive parts of France in which to buy a property. It is second only to Paris, so don't expect to buy a mansion on a shoestring budget in St Laurent. The usual rules apply, in that properties on the waterfront are the most expensive, with little apartments and studios tucked away in the less fashionable corners of town offering the best value.
