The town of Villefranche sur Mer is a real gem, even in the fortunate setting of the French Riviera. Set close to Monaco, in the far south-east of France, Villefranche sur Mer has everything that makes this area so popular. It boasts a sparkling blue sea fringed by sandy beaches, beautiful villas attracting more than a sprinkling of stars and super rich, and, of course, shopping and dining of the highest quality. (Tina Turner, the famous singer, has a home in the town, which she is said to visit at least once a month!) To this already heady mix it adds the unique character of the old town, the Vieille Village.
Villefranche sur Mer is probably best described as a seaside resort, but if this description conjures up images of Blackpool with sunshine, or the resorts on Spain's popular "Costas", think again. Definitely deserving of the tag of "upmarket", the town has more than its fair share of super rich residents living a life of luxury in the mansions and fabulous villas in the hills above the town. And its restaurants and shops are of the very highest calibre in order to cater for these exacting clients!
What really marks it out as special, however, is its beautiful and fascinating old town. Here, as well as consisting of quaint mediaeval cobbled alleyways and pretty old houses dating back centuries, the streets have evocative and strange sounding names such as the Rue Obscura (the hidden street). Many of the houses arch over the narrow streets, forming vaulted walkways which are lit from within for safe navigation in the darkness. The best example of this is indeed found in the Rue Obscura, well named as this covered walkway runs for half of its length, quite hiding the street from view!
Villefranche has a long and interesting history, and is thought to date back to the Iron Age as artefacts from this period have been found in the area. Consequently, there are some good historic buildings to see, and these include the church, the Saint Elme Citadel, the Chapelle de Saint Pierre and of course, the old town. There are numerous museums and art collections too, with works by illustrious painters and sculptors. Visit the Alpine hunting museum, or on a lighter note, enjoy the great weather whilst watching a play or the latest film at the open air theatre or cinema.
There is no shortage of things to do in Villefranche sur Mer. The Mediterranean Sea offers as always a thousand possibilities, and you can swim, surf, sail, fish, water ski and more, as the fancy takes you. The area has some pretty walks so if a gentle stroll is your preferred method of exercise then enjoy walking along the seafront and beside the fishing port, with its colourful boats and fish restaurants. Of course, you can always pop over to Monaco for a really exclusive day out!
The most popular route to Villefranche sur Mer from the UK involves air travel to Nice, and there is a good choice of airlines that serve this airport and departure airports from the UK. The airlines include British Airways, Air France, bmibaby, easyJet, bmi, Jet2, flybe and Aer Lingus. Rail travel is also possible, via Eurostar and TGV to Nice, and the town is on a main railway line from Nice to Monaco.
If you are on a shoestring budget and looking for the bargain of the century, the news is not good. Villefranche sur Mer is one of France's most desirable property hotspots, so prices are steep to say the least. Of course, anyone with a keen eye for a bargain may get lucky every now and then, especially if they have the cash ready and move quickly! Generally though, property here is expensive, but the payback is good. The town is beautiful and well equipped, the properties of excellent quality, the weather fantastic and the neighbours pretty exclusive! Rental income would also be high should you decide to rent out the property when not in residence yourself.
