Provençal market town

Brignoles is a large market town lying slightly to the west of the centre of the Var department of Provence in the south-east of France. It was once a major mining centre and supplier of natural marble. These days, however, the town relies more on the supply of peaches, honey, olives and olive oil for its economy.

Brignoles's old quarter

Brignoles has an authentic old quarter, where you can find the narrow, shady winding streets and old houses in the deep, soft shades of ochres and pinks that are so typically Provençal. All around the town are the massive vineyards which produce the immensely popular Côte de Provence wines.

Shades of a time long gone...

As you wander around Brignoles's old quarter you will find that there is a real sense of past times called to mind. The fountain in the Place Caramy, for example, was once an essential source where many would stop to collect water and pass a moment or two chatting with a neighbour. There is a building which still bears a visible advertising hoarding for the aperitif "Dubonnet", painted directly onto the old wall. The colours are a little faded, but you can still clearly make out the advertisement.

Historically interesting

The old town has many places of historical interest, and as with everywhere in Provence these are best discovered gradually and naturally, as you simply savour the character and charm of the town. If you still aren't sure where to start though, you could do worse than begin with a visit to the Eglise Saint Saveur, with its 12th century Romanesque doorway, or the 13th century Château des Comptes de Provence, now a museum with some very interesting exhibits.

Modern centre

Brignoles has a thriving and bustling modern centre too, and there are all manner of shops and entertainments here for you to enjoy. All basic needs are catered for, and the town has banks, schools, doctors and other amenities. Restaurants are excellent here, with many offering the traditionally delicious Provençal cuisine based on tomatoes, olives, herbs and other aromatic delights!

Around and about

Centrally situated in the Var, Brignoles is ideally placed for further exploration of this beautiful region. The Azure Coast, one of the most desirable parts of the Mediterranean, is only a short drive away, and makes a great day out whatever the season. Bear in mind, though, that the roads to the coast can get very busy in the summer, so set off early! It is also entertaining and educational to visit the vineyards and if possible to, take a guided tour. This allows you to taste the different wines as well as to see the process by which they are produced. Tours can be arranged through the tourist office in the town.

Sports and leisure

There are lots of different sports available locally, with an exceptional eighteen-hole golf course nearby at Barbaroux. The lovely countryside lends itself well to hiking, cycling and horse-riding, and there is plenty of swimming and fishing nearby too, in the lakes, rivers and the sea.

How to get there

Getting to Brignoles from the UK is simple. There are a good number of airports within easy reach, including Toulon (Ryanair), Marseille (BA, Aer Lingus, easyJet, Ryanair), Avignon (flybe), and Nice ( Air France, British Airways, Aer Lingus, bmibaby, bmi, easyJet and Jet2). The TGV can take you to Marseille, making rail travel another good option.
