Le Thoronet - where wine and sunshine are a way of life...

The village of Le Thoronet which is situated in the heart of the Var, in that blessed region of Provence in the south-east of France, is a place where great wine and sunshine are not just a dream, but a way of life. Le Thoronet lies in the very heart of the Var winelands, where not only are there vineyards and olive trees, but also the heady aromas of the Provençal "garrigue" (wild grasslands), a heady and evocative bouquet of lavender, thyme, rosemary and also pine from the forests that so thickly coat the hillsides above the village.

Cistercian Abbey

Le Thoronet is famed for its Cistercian Abbey, and this is indeed a must see when in the area. The buildings have been perfectly and sympathetically restored, and it is one of the best examples of a Cistercian Abbey in Europe. Now in use as a museum, the purity and simplicity of the buildings, so typically Cistercian, inspire an air of calm spirituality even today.

Village life

Le Thoronet is a village with a real life going on as well as history and tourism, and you will find all basic amenities here as well as a few little luxuries. There are the essentials of a boulangerie (bakers) for that all important fresh bread and mid morning pastry, a "presse" (newsagent) so you can keep up with the news, la Poste (post office), a church, a general shop for everyday needs and a couple of bars and even two or three very decent restaurants. If you need to do some banking, you will have to go to a nearby larger town as there is no bank in the village, but there is a cash point so you can draw money out easily.

Out and about

There are lots of opportunities for partaking in sports and outdoor leisure activities in and around Le Thoronet. The lovely countryside, with its rivers and forests and a superb climate, means that activities such as fishing, swimming in lakes and rivers, canoeing, kayaking, horse-riding, walking, cycling and tennis are all most enjoyable pastimes. There are some excellent golf courses in the area, and of course, don't forget that the blue waters of the Med are only a heartbeat away... or a short drive, anyway!

Lots of places to visit

There are also plenty of places to visit if you aren't feeling all that sporty, but still want to get out and about. Take a look at Toulon, the lovely capital city of the Var, or simply enjoy driving around and discovering the glories of one of France's most blessed departments.

How to get there

The village is found approximately thirteen kilometres after leaving this auto route.
