The village of Le Muy, which lies in the Var department of southern France in the Provence-Alpes-Cote-D'Azur region, is typically Provençal both in appearance and in outlook. The colourful houses, in shades of terracotta and gold, flaunt their gaily painted blue and green shutters in truly southern style under skies that seem to be endlessly blue and blessed with a hot brilliant sun.
This is Provence, and when you are in Le Muy you are instantly aware of why Provence is so universally loved. All around the village are the unmistakeably Mediterranean forests of pine and cork, interspersed with fertile vineyards and bisected by rivers. Just to the south lies the warm Mediterranean Sea, with the famous resorts of St Tropez and Fréjus close at hand.
Le Muy has plenty to offer both visitors and residents. There are some interesting historical buildings: namely the Charles Quint Tower, which is an eleventh century edifice; the Liberation Museum which marks the fact that Le Muy was the first village in the Var to be liberated in the war; the sixteenth century church; and the old bridge which looks down on two weirs that used to direct the rushing waters to the old mills.
The village is also exceptionally well equipped with shops, and is said to have the finest selection of food shops in the area, so be prepared to meet temptation! There are also some twenty restaurants here, with all tastes and pockets catered for. There are pizzerias, informal brasseries, traditional French establishments and don't dismiss the lowly routiers… here you can often get an excellent meal for a few euros, and this will include a very drinkable wine!
The outdoor markets, held on Thursdays and Saturdays, are said to be the best in the Var, possibly the best in the whole of Provence, so whatever you do, don't miss them … get out of bed early and enjoy some real local colour!
If you want to take a look outside the village (and you certainly should, as the area has much to commend it), you could begin with a trip to the famous coastal resort of St Tropez, once a favourite haunt of celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot. Fréjus is another popular holiday spot where there is plenty to do and lots for the kids, and this is only around a fifteen minute trip from Le Muy. On a more natural note, there are the spectacular Gorges du Verdon to see, whose dramatic cliffs take your breath away, and there is a delightful nature trail known as the Aurelian Way, which can be followed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.
If you like these delightful, gentle creatures then don't miss the opportunity to see the Village des Tortues, where some 2,500 of them are cared for in natural surroundings. Two hectares of Provençal swamp land have been given up to this project, and it really is a fascinating place to visit. Look out in particular for the rare Hermann Tortoise, which is threatened with extinction.
Provence offers endless sporting opportunities, and Le Muy is in the centre of a region so diverse and rich in natural wonders that you will find almost anything is possible. You can take advantage of the warm, calm waters of the Mediterranean Sea, or you can try your hand at shooting the rapids on the rushing rivers of the gorges. The Argens, the river which runs by the village, has both calm and rushing waters, so all levels and abilities will be able to enjoy water sports from Le Muy. Horse-riding is popular in the area, and this makes a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Those whose pleasures come at a more restful pace may like to visit the vineyards and wine houses where wine tasting can be arranged!
There are several airports within easy reach of Le Muy, and of these the nearest is Toulon. Ryanair offers direct flights from the UK to Toulon. Other airports are Marseilles, which has flights with BA, Aer Lingus, easyJet, and Ryanair, or Nice, which is served by BA, Air France, Aer Lingus, bmi, bmibaby, easyJet, and Jet2. The train is another possibility, and you can travel with Rail Europe from London to Cannes.
With everything that Le Muy has to offer, you wouldn't expect property prices to be low, and they certainly aren't. However, Le Muy does represent a better property deal than many places in the region, as it is situated a little way inland, and is not on the edge of a major city. Property here will have a great rental potential, but be aware that desirable property will be snapped up fairly soon after it appears on the market, so don't hang around if you find something you like.
