The Var department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region is home to a number of glamorous towns. There's Cannes, of film festival fame and St Tropez (Brigitte Bardot and the jet set), for example. And then there are the lively holiday resorts like Fréjus and Saint Raphael. But this part of the Var is also home to unassuming, tranquil and charming villages such as Les Adrets de l'Estérel. Here, amid the woodlands, forests, lakes and hills, you can find a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the Riviera, yet stay within easy reach of the action. It's perfect.
The village has quite a history, although there aren't really any major historic monuments. There is a 17th century church, which is worth a look, but its charm really lies in the picturesque old streets, the houses of honey-coloured Provençal stone, and the views. In spite of its proximity to St Tropez and Cannes, life in Les Adrets continues at the time-honoured slow pace long established in rural Provence.
The village offers good local amenities, including some shops and services. There are a couple of bakeries, a small supermarket and there's a post office which has a cash machine. If you need a greater variety of shops it only takes a few minutes to reach larger towns like Fayence or Fréjus. Even Nice, the "grand old dame" of the Riviera, is just half an hour's drive. And there is nothing that you can't find in Nice! Les Adrets also offers a restaurant, a bar/restaurant and a pizzeria. Many more restaurants are within easy reach once you've eaten your way through the menus offered by the ones in the village itself.
When a village has a setting and location like that of Les Adrets l'Estérel, there is little that you can dream of doing that isn't accessible. Fancy a dip in the Med? It's minutes away, in fact, you can see it from the higher points of the village. Or would you prefer the tranquillity of bathing, kayaking or windsurfing in/on an inland lake? No problem. Two leisure lakes, Saint Cassien and Avellan are close to Les Adrets. The forests and hills that surround the village are ideal for horse-riding, mountain biking and walking. And, golfers will be able to take advantage of not one, but half a dozen good courses, including two at championship standard.
From a base in this part of the Var, you can't go wrong when it comes to planning days out. Taking time to explore the grand old towns of Nice, Saint Tropez and Cannes is almost obligatory. But if you've done all that before, what about Fréjus? Its fame as a holiday resort is well documented, but it also has a Roman aqueduct and amphitheatre. Or, travel inland to one of France's most spectacular sights. The Verdon Gorge (Gorges du Verdon) is beautiful, and it's the deepest canyon in Europe. For a change of scene, you might choose to visit the wealthy principality of Monaco, or to take a cocktail or two in the lively and trendy bars of Juan les Pins. You can rub shoulders with the rich and famous, then lose yourself in serene countryside. Spend a day on the beach, or pop in the car and find yourself in a ski resort with an hour. Anything is possible in the magical Var.
Getting to Les Adrets de l'Estérel couldn't be simpler. Nice, with its major international airport and TGV station, is just half an hour away. Les Adrets has its own railway station too, so continuing by local train is easy. If you're driving, you'll find the village near the main A8 motorway, on the D237.
Property close to the coast in Provence is never cheap, but as it is always in demand, it makes a good investment. Les Adrets is a highly sought after location. And, there are some stunning properties currently on the market.
