Sainte Maxime - a perfect Provencal location

It's hard to find a town or village in the sunny region of Provence that can't be said to have a pretty idyllic location. But, Sainte Maxime surely occupies one of the best spots around. Facing south, over the stunning blue waters of the Gulf of Saint Tropez, Sainte Maxime offers not only ease of access to the well documented resorts of the Riviera, but also a less trodden path into the gorgeous countryside inland. The town itself is of a good, yet not overwhelming size. The town centre is vibrant and well equipped with commerce and culture, yet retains original and interesting mediaeval characteristics and exudes the essence of the Mediterranean.

In and about town

Sainte Maxime offers everything you could want in terms of shops, bars and restaurants within its boundaries. There's the eclectic mix of small, local style shops where you can pick up delicacies unique to the region, traditional markets and modern shopping centres. Having both a mediaeval heritage and an economy driven by tourism, there's also plenty to do and see. The historic features of the town include a square tower dating back to the 16th century, an olive mill and a 15th century chateau. More modern, yet equally interesting attractions are a museum of mechanical music, botanical gardens where you can walk and sit in the shade of sweeping trees to gain refuge from the blazing sun, and an Aqua Park.

Enjoy the beaches and all kinds of outdoor activities

This is the French Riviera, home to the best loved beaches and warm waters of the Mediterranean. The area is the spiritual home of water sports, with boat trips and activities such as water skiing, jet skiing, scuba diving and just about any other sea and beach related sports you can name. It isn't only about the sea, though. Sainte Maxime also offers opportunities to go horse-riding, walking and cycling, or to play a round of golf. You'll find tennis courts, petanque courts and even clay pigeon shooting, should that take your fancy.

Visit glamorous Saint Tropez and the fascinating Calanques

Once you've decided to leave the town and explore the area, you'll probably want to take a look at Saint Tropez, famed for its glamorous past and celebrity visitors. Popular resorts such as Frejus are easily reached, and it only takes a little longer to reach the grand old city of Nice, where there's enough to keep you busily exploring for days. You might choose to visit the spectacular Calanques, fascinating rock formations that are a unique feature of this coast.

Explore vineyards and pine forests inland

Or you could turn your attention inland and discover whispering olive groves, neat vineyards and acres of pine forests that resound with that most evocative of Mediterranean sounds, the incessant chirping of the cicadas. Wherever you choose, it's sure to please.

How to get there

The area is well connected in transportation terms, and very easy to reach from the UK. TGV stations abound, with the major ones being Toulon, Nice and Marseille. Rail networks will take you close to your destination with the minimum of hassle. Flying offers a choice of airports too, at the same three main cities, and there's a good variety of flights and airlines. Drivers can access Sainte Maxime, which sits on the D559, from the main A8 motorway.
