If you haven't been to the town of L'Isle sur la Sorgue, you really should. It's one of those towns whose sights, scents and sounds live in the memory for ever, once experienced. Blending Provence with Venice, L'Isle sur la Sorgue is packed with charm, interest and atmosphere. It lies in the Vaucluse department, on the River Sorgue and has a number of canals. And besides its very Venetian air, the town is famed for its colourful markets and antiques fairs.
L'Isle sur la Sorgue simply oozes historic charm. Its colourful waterside houses, its canals, the River Sorgue and working water wheels, add a very special ambience. There's a very impressive collegiate church, the Notre Dame des Anges, first built in 122 and rebuilt in the 17th century. And the markets, which originated as long ago as 1596, are another wonderful part of L'Isle sur la Sorgue's heritage. The markets and antique fairs are very important to this town, so they are not to be missed! Throughout the summer, there are general markets on Thursday and Sunday mornings, plus an antiques market that lasts all day on Sundays. But, there are many more markets, antiques, fairs, fetes and festivals. The town's Tourist Office can give details of all current events and how to find them.
As a good sized town that's well used to catering to tourists, L'Isle sur la Sorgue has all the amenities you could need. It's packed with attractive general shops, craft shops and antiques shops. The waterside cafés, bars and restaurants are fabulous and plentiful. There's a lot of waterside for them to occupy!
Browsing the markets, antiques fairs and shops of L'Isle sur la Sorgue is a very popular activity, as is dining in the cafés. But, there are other things to enjoy here too. Try a visit to the intriguing Doll Museum, in the Rue Carnot. Or how about a round of golf at the nearby Provence Country Club? There's a swimming pool, open to the public, or you can rent a mountain bike and try a little VTT. There's some lovely walking country too.
The lovely old town of Avignon (yes, the one that's famous for its bridge) is within easy reach, by road or by rail. Other towns worth a look include historic and beautiful Orange and Carpentras. And just a little further away is the stunning town of Aix en Provence. Or, head out into the lovely Luberon, where Peter Mayle's "A Year in Provence" was written.
Getting to L'Isle sur la Sorgue from the UK is really easy. You can fly to nearby Avignon with Air France or Flybe, or for more choice of flights and airlines, head for Toulon, Marseille or Nice. Rail travel is simple too, as there are Eurostar trains direct to Avignon in summer. For the rest of the year, there are still trains to Avignon from the UK but you'll have to make a change along the way. L'Isle sur la Sorgue has its own railway station too, so you can link from Avignon to complete your journey by rail. If you're driving, you'll find the town from the D901, D31 or the D25. The nearest motorway is the A7.

The bad news is that property there is, as you'd expect, not cheap, although it can still represent good value as the town is so sought after and values hold well.
