For buying and selling property in Abondance
Abondance is a traditional and very beautiful village that is located to the south of Lake Geneva, in the Haute-Savoie department of eastern France. Set in some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, and close enough to the Swiss border to make day trips to Switzerland a real possibility, Abondance has charms enough to make you never want to leave!
Abondance is picture perfect, with traditional Savoyard houses and chalets rather than the concrete monstrosities found in some Alpine resorts. Whether you see the village first in summer, when the mountain pastures are lush and flower filled, and the air resounds to the sound of cow bells tinkling as the pretty brown and white Abondance cows munch the sweet summer grass, or in winter when the snow falls and turns the village into a life sized Christmas card, you are bound to fall in love with Abondance.
Although the village makes much of its present day income from the relatively modern phenomenon of mountain tourism, Abondance is a place where history counts and where heritage and traditions are preserved. Visit the Abbey, in the very heart of Abondance, which was built in Gothic style in the 14th century, and which has some wonderful murals depicting the life of the Virgin Mary, in a Savoyard setting.
Learn all about the heritage of the village and the region at the Maison du Val, where you will find regular exhibitions, demonstrations of traditional crafts and cheese making, and from where guided tours of the village are arranged. For something really different Abondance invites you to spend some time on a mountain farm that still works to the old methods, painstakingly preserving the past and making it work for the future.
Abondance holds a lovely market every Sunday, and here you can find all manner of things on sale. Do take the opportunity to buy the delicious creamy Abondance cheese and other Savoyard specialities, you will find the stall holders quite happy to let you taste before you make your selection. The village is well equipped with all the shops necessary for everyday life as well as specialist outlets for sporting activities such as ski equipment or climbing gear hire.
As the gastronomy of the region is so well known you will surely want to dine out on occasions, and Abondance, with seven restaurants (including a Michelin starred establishment!), is just the place to enjoy this most French of pleasures.
Mountain sports are on offer in summer and in winter, and although the snow record in Abondance is not always the best for skiing, there are plenty of higher resorts within reach which can be easily accessed. Try anything here from parapenting to snow shoeing, dog sledding or rock climbing... the only limiting factor is your nerve! Switzerland is just the other side of Lake Geneva, so a day out seeing the sights and treating yourself to some fine chocolates or precision clocks and watches in Switzerland could be on the agenda too.
The nearest airports with direct flights to and from the UK are situated at Geneva and Lyon. Geneva is served by British Airways, Aer Lingus, easyJet, flybe, Jet2 and Air France, while Lyon a bit further away is served by Air France, British Airways, easyJet and bmi. The train is another great way to travel to the area as the Eurostar ski special runs all the way from England to Bourg St Maurice or Moûtiers. You can purchase a small studio close to the village for less than 60,00 Euros, find yourself a traditional Savoyard farm to renovate into a real dream home, or indulge in the luxury of owning a massive and fabulous ski lodge with views of Mont Blanc.
