Bellevaux - a picturesque Alpine town

Bellevaux is a picturesque Alpine town that doubles as a ski resort, and which is set in the glorious countryside of the Haute-Savoie in the French Alps. The town has good facilities, and offers exceptional access to some of Europe's best pistes in winter, in addition to many summer mountain sports and attractions. It lies near to Annecy and to Lake Geneva, in one of the most desirable Alpine locations.

A settled community and well equipped village

Some ski resorts are really just ski resorts, without any feel of a settled community life, but Bellevaux is not one of these. The town is well equipped with everyday necessities such as a useful and unpretentious range of shops (bakers, butchers, a hardware shop, newsagents, a video rental facility and a petrol station), and also offers a pharmacy, a tourist office, bars and restaurants.

Sports and leisure activities available

Bellevaux is a mine of possibilities when it comes to sports and leisure. In addition to having access to superb skiing, the activities available in winter also include snowboarding, dog sledding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and even night skiing. Summer brings a whole new set of mountain sports, including randonées, rock climbing, white water sports, canyoning, bowling, tennis and pony trekking. Children are also well catered for, and can enjoy the mountain biking, skate park and ski schools.

Explore romantic Annecy and Lake Geneva

Other than the sporting side of life in Bellevaux, attractions near the resort include visits to the chic and romantic town of Annecy, with its Venetian style canals; to the stunning Lake Geneva for water sports and lakeside elegance reminiscent of an affluent, bygone age; spa treatments at Thonon les Bains; and trips around the traditional old Alpine villages and hamlets which give a real taste of rural Savoyard life. Walking in the countryside is every bit as enjoyable as skiing down the pistes, bringing glimpses of rare mountain flowers in spring and summer, the enchanting sound of cowbells ringing in the fresh clean air and the chance to discover and visit traditional farms that produce their own specialist cheeses and other dairy products.

How to get there

Geneva is the best airport for accessing the town, offering direct flights from the UK with a multitude of airlines. Lyon and Chambéry airports are also possible options. You can also travel by rail as the Haute-Savoie is well served by ski specials, Eurostar and TGV services. The town is found along the D26 for those who are driving to the resort.

Property prices and availability in and around Bellevaux

Property in the Alps will always be sought after, and prices are usually high in comparison with the Pyrénées or the Massif Central ski areas. Having said that, you can still get studio apartments for under 50,000 Euros in some locations, and if you have a little cash to spend, currently on offer in Bellevaux for less than 500,000 Euros, is a lovely three-bedroom chalet, with its own garden and connection to the pistes.
