For buying and selling property in Combloux
There are some ski resorts in the Alps built of mounds of concrete, which resound to the sounds of hordes of tourists and the incessant beat of music from the nightclubs. And then there are those Alpine villages which look, sound and smell much as they have for centuries, but which just happen to offer superb skiing as well. Combloux is very firmly set in the second category. For its beauty and charm it has earned the soubriquet, "Pearl of Mont Blanc". Surrounded by stunning scenery, Combloux is traditional and totally beguiling, with its collection of old village houses, working farms, and its sympathetically designed ski village which manages to blend seamlessly with its traditional soul.
Combloux is brilliant for families, whether you want to be there in winter (for the skiing and snowboarding) or summer (for the walking, climbing etc.) or, simply, if you hope to live there all year round. The lifestyle in Combloux is excellent, with the clear mountain air and wonderful natural produce being in plentiful supply, whatever the season. There are ski schools, crèches, child-friendly restaurants and shops that supply all everyday needs for all ages.
Combloux has most facilities, including good shops, a number of excellent eateries, a lovely Baroque church, leisure facilities for all seasons, health care of a high standard, and there is a bank which offers a 24-hour cash point facility. But should you decide you do need access to a larger town, Combloux is also close to Megève (only four kilometres away) which offers everything you might accord with a famous resort town.
Combloux offers the opportunity to discover some forgotten treasures of the Alps, with heritage tours available to visit some of the traditional farms and buildings of the region, with lots of information about the life of the mountains that have shaped Combloux.
There is great skiing to be had in Combloux, as the 360 degree panorama of Mont Blanc offered from the village would suggest and promise, but there is a more unusual pleasure to be found too. Combloux has the first French "eco lake" that is open to swimmers, and it is quite an experience to change in one of the traditionally styled chalets that line the lakeside, and know that you are going to be swimming in complete harmony with nature. There is also a spa and health centre on site. Mountain biking is another very popular sport here in summer, and the resort has gained something of a reputation among aficionados of this sport.
To return to the snow sports, for a moment, the skiing is excellent, with 100 kilometres of slopes in the local area and all levels catered for, from absolute beginners to black run experts. (The area opens up to 445 kilometres of pistes when combining nearby ski resorts, which are easily accessible.) There is also the well equipped snow park, which is very popular with boarders and freestyle skiers. There are other snow sports available locally too, such as dog sledding, ice climbing and many more. Megève, Chamonix and the other larger resorts of the Haute-Savoie are within easy reach, and you can take advantage of facilities and activities offered around the region.
The location, beside Mont Blanc, is superb, and makes a great base for further exploration not just of eastern France, but also of Italy and Switzerland. Both countries are just over an hour away, so there is no need to feel confined just because you are in the mountains! Places worth seeing close to Combloux include the pretty village of Sallanches, the extremely stylish and famous resorts of Megève and Chamonix, and the Roman spa town of Saint Gervais. Take the opportunity from your doorstep too to make the journey up Mont Blanc itself, whether you plan to ski down, or to take the easy option and go down in the cable car that took you up!
To get to the resort from the UK you can fly to any of the eastern airports, including Geneva, St Etienne, Lyon, Chambéry and Grenoble. Geneva is served by British Airways, Aer Lingus, easyJet, flybe, Jet2 and Air France; St Etienne by Ryanair; Lyon by Air France, British Airways, flybe, easyJet and bmi; Chambéy by flybe, jet2 and Astraeus; and finally Grenoble by Ryanair and easyJet. If you prefer the train, you can take the Eurostar's ski special train all the way from the UK to either Bourg St Maurice or Moûtiers. If driving, follow the A6 from Paris towards Lyon. The village itself is located on the D1212.
The Alps are not cheap. There's no way of avoiding that truth, but there are ways of lessening the blow. One of these ways is to seek a property in a quiet, less well known resort such as Combloux, where prices are certainly less than in a prestigious resort like Megève. Another way of lessening the financial impact of buying a property in the ski areas of the Alps is to let the property out at times when you yourself are not using it, which is certainly possible in a place such as Combloux, where there are equal opportunities for letting in winter and summer.
