Essert Romand - tranquil mountain escape

Different strokes for different folks, and this is never more true than when choosing the perfect location in the French Alps. While most want access to great skiing and stunning scenery, some seek lively resorts with a throbbing après ski scene and lots of activities right on the doorstep, while others prefer to escape to the peace and tranquillity of a real Savoyard hamlet and lose themselves in the beauty of the surroundings. If you are more of the second type of person than the first, the lovely, traditional village of Essert Romand may be your dream location.

Most amenities found nearby in Morzine

Essert Romand is tiny, and you aren't going to find a street packed with shops and nightclubs within it, although there is a good Savoyard restaurant. However, if you do want shops (and even the most self sufficient of us need to buy groceries, rent skis and similar) they are all of five minutes away in the much larger resort of Morzine. What Essert Romand does have, in spades, is peace, beauty and a gloriously traditional feel. This was a farming community long before the tourists arrived to ski in Morzine, and you can still see the sheep and goats grazing the sweet mountain pastures in the green, summer months.

Discover the heritage of the area

The natural heritage of the area is well documented, but there is a built heritage in and around the village to discover as well, should you take time off from skiing or mountain walking to do so. In Essert Romand there is a beautifully restored mediaeval chapel, with several more churches, chapels and oratories of note within easy distance.

Stunning in summer as well as winter

Morzine, the big sister of Essert Romand, is literally on the doorstep, and here you can find everything you need in addition to a wealth of bars, restaurants and activities. The skiing and other snow sports in the locality are legendary, as attested to by thousands of snow fans every winter, but the area is also lovely, if much quieter, in summer. Getting to know the area better might involve seeing stunning waterfalls, lush, mountain pastures, deep pine forests, Alpine lakes and jaw-dropping mountains and gorges.

Visit nearby spa towns for some therapy

If you want to visit towns and villages, take a look at the chic town of Annecy, the skiers' and climbers' paradise of Chamonix and the spa towns of Evian les Bains, Thonon les Bains and Saint Gervais les Bains. All are ideal for taking the waters and easing out the aches and pains after a hard day's skiing, or sight seeing!

How to get there

You can fly direct from the UK to Geneva or Chambéry and travel on to the village by car. The nearest airport is Geneva which is served by a multitude of airlines, while Chambéry is served by British Airways, Flybe, Jet2, Snow Jet and Bmi Baby. If you prefer rail travel for the bulk of the journey, just hop onto Eurostar and change at Paris or Lille to a TGV which will get you to Cluses, not far from your destination. If driving, the village is found on the D328, near to the A40.

Property prices and availability in and around Essert Romand

Property in the Alps, especially near to popular ski areas, is not cheap, it's a fact of life. A super chalet is likely to cost you over 600,000 Euros, but if you are happy to take on some work, building or renovation, you may be able to get rather more for your money.
