It's hard to find a truly peaceful corner of the Alps these days, at least one that's near enough to skiing and the amenities of the popular resorts. But, if you like the idea of at least living with the illusion of splendid isolation, La Baume could be just the place. The tiny village, which has just over 250 inhabitants, is set against the stunning scenery of the mountains and valleys of the Haute-Savoie. Its picturesque charm comes from its simplicity. The village consists of old farmsteads and Alpine chalets rather than modern apartment blocks. Yet, it is just 25 minutes from the busy slopes of the Portes du Soleil ski area.
It's mainly about natural heritage, in La Baume. The setting is perfect. Crisp, unpolluted air, fresh sparkling snow in winter and verdant green in summer, La Baume is a picture waiting to be painted. The best known tourist spot beside La Baume is la Pointe d'Ireuse, a summit that attracts visitors for its natural beauty and fabulous views. There's an old church in the village.
The pace of life is slow and relaxing. The village has no shops, restaurants or bars. So, if you are seeking the party lifestyle, it's not going to be the place for you. However, if you prefer to experience a slice of real Savoyard life, escape the crowds and enjoy a traditional atmosphere, La Baume is just perfect. And if you are considering living full-time in La Baume and you have young children, there is a little primary school in the village. Of course, however much you enjoy escaping the hustle and bustle of life, there will be times that you need to go into town to get some shopping, or to dine out on the acclaimed Savoyard gastronomy. No problem. Le Biot and Saint Jean d'Aulps are close by, and bigger resort towns with varied and extensive amenities like Morzine and Les Gets are also accessible.
Skiers will find a drive of only 25 minutes takes them to some of the best skiing in the Alps. In fact, winter or summer, there are numerous mountain sports and other activities available, ranging from skiing and snowboarding to pony trekking and even golf. Or, you can take the simplest activity of all and just enjoy the glorious walks and natural trails around the village.
Leaving aside the ski resorts and the entertainment and facilities found in them, days out from La Baume might include a trip to beautiful Annecy, known as the Venice of the Alps, or to the sumptuous towns on the shores of Lake Geneva. Treat yourself to the luxury of a spa day in Evian les Bains, or revisit the past with a trip to the Notre Dame Abbey of Abondance.
To fly to the area, head for Geneva, which is served by a multitude of airlines. Train travel can take you to Grenoble or Lyon by super quick TGV. Finally, if you're going by car (don't forget the snow chains!) head for the D902, from where you'll find La Baume.
Due to its slightly more isolated situation, property in La Baume tends to be cheaper than that in the well known resorts. So, it's well worth a look. It's also a brilliant place to look if you want an affordable, traditional Savoyard farmhouse, which is rare, anywhere else within reach of the ski slopes!
