Le Grand Bornand - a family ski resort

Le Grand Bornand is a family ski resort set in the stunning Aravis Mountains region of the Haute-Savoie. Made up of two villages, le grand Bornand and Chinaillon, it's particularly notable for its picturesque chalets, some of which are 300 years old, and all of which are traditional and charming. In fact, Le Grand Bornand is one of the prettiest of all the Savoyard villages, so if spending time in the mountains is about more than just great skiing (there's plenty of that too), it could be just the place for you.

Typically Savoyard

Le Grand Bornand is bursting with Savoyard charm. It isn't just the chalets, although they are very much a part of its character, but the entire village is delightfully authentic. The old market hall is remarkable, and evocative of days gone by when it was the centre of village life, long before the skiers arrived! The church is pretty too, and many of the buildings are original and typically Savoyard. Interestingly, the famous Reblochon cheese, mainstay of so many Savoyard dishes, was first made in Le Grand Bornand.

Shops and services available in Le Grand Bornand

Le Grand Bornand is well supplied with shops and services, so whether you are looking for somewhere to hire skis or other sporting equipment or a shop or supermarket to buy your groceries, you won't have any problems finding what you want. You'll also find a pharmacy, a launderette, a post office, bank, a hairdresser's and a petrol station!

Après ski offers something for everyone

When it comes to après ski there's nothing to complain about either. In fact, with over 30 restaurants, loads of bars, discos and a nightclub between them, the two villages of Le Grand Bornand can offer you all kinds of après ski to suit your mood or your party.

Skiing and other activities to enjoy

The resort has on piste skiing for all abilities. With 90 kilometres of runs, the ski area offers 10 green runs, 15 blue, 14 red and 3 black runs, served by no less than 29 lifts to get you where you want to be as fast as possible. The resort is also excellent for snow boarders. If you fancy a change from skiing or boarding, you'll find there are lots of other activities to try. Take a ride in a horse drawn sleigh for the ultimate in romance, have a go at snowshoeing, experience the stunning sights of the area from a hot air balloon or just settle down to enjoy an evening in the cinema. Whoever you are, there will be something here to keep you busy.

Le Grand Bornand in summer

Of course, Le Grand Bornand doesn't cease to exist in summer, just because the snow has melted. In summer it is arguably even more beautiful, and there are just as many things to do to make the most of time spent in this very special place. It's a paradise for fans of adventure sports like mountain biking and climbing and there are gentler activities such as pony trekking and walking to enjoy as well.

Idyllic getaway offering a relaxed way of life

The mountain pastures in summer are filled with doe-eyed cattle, and the scent of summer Alpine herbs and flowers fills the clear air with a lovely perfume. Le Grand Bornand is an idyllic getaway in summer when it's calmer than in the ski season, and seems to settle into a really relaxed way of life.
