Les Contamines Montjoie is a ski resort and traditional Alpine village that is located in the Haute-Savoie department of eastern France. It may not be as well known as some resorts in the area, but it offers excellent skiing, great holiday facilities and beautiful scenery, having preserved a traditional aspect and atmosphere which exerts its considerable charm on all who spend time there.
Les Contamines Montjoie is one of those alpine villages that has managed to preserve an authentic look and feel while still providing great facilities for tourism. There are many old and carefully restored buildings in and around the village, and the locals are very proud of their patrimony and culture. The village has a pretty Baroque church, and many of the farms that lie close to the village have been maintained in their original style. In March, Les Contamines Montjoie holds a vibrant festival of music and fireworks, and during this much of the history of the area is explained.
For those wishing to stay or live in Les Contamines Montjoie, the amenities are first rate. There are plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment facilities, and a whole host of activities on offer at all times of year. The village is best known for its winter sports, but summer brings its own pleasures, and the green pastures and Alpine flowers make the countryside no less spectacular than when it is sparkling with snow in the depths of winter.
Skiing and snowboarding are the winter lifeblood of Les Contamines Montjoie, and it is said that the resort is one of the Alps' hidden treasures. It is far less known than Megève and Chamonix, its neighbours, but it has excellent ski runs, a great snowboard park, and a network of lifts and ski schools. The resort also has numerous pistes for all levels, and there are off piste possibilities as well for those who seek the ultimate adrenaline rush.
Les Contamines Montjoie is so delightful and has access to such good skiing and other sports that you may feel you have no need to travel further afield, but should you wish to discover a little more of the surrounding area you will find the village makes a very good base to do exactly this. Close to Mont Blanc and the popular resorts such as Chamonix, Les Contamines Montjoie enjoys easy access to the Mont Blanc tunnel, making a day trip to Italy another option.
Geneva has the nearest airport to Les Contamines Montjoie, but it is also possible to fly to Lyons or Chambéry. Fans of train travel can arrive in style direct from the UK by taking the ski special to Bourg St Maurice. Finally, drivers can travel almost all the way from Calais on the excellent auto routes and complete the journey within just eight hours. If driving from Geneva, take the Geneva to Chamonix auto route, leaving at junction 12. The town can be found from the D909.
Property in the ski areas of the Alps usually comes at a price, but some resorts are more expensive then others. Les Contamines isn't cheap, but it is less well known and thus less expensive than some of its famous neighbours such as Chamonix. Property types range from small but well appointed apartments from under 150,000 Euros (at the time of writing) to prestige, architect designed luxury chalets. Almost all of the property here is in sympathetic style to the origins of the village, and more attractive than that found in many resorts.
