An authentic village heart

Although it has recently experienced massive development and expansion as a ski resort (the population rises to a staggering 15,000 in the winter!), the village of Les Gets in the Haute-Savoie department of eastern France, is still an old established Alpine village at heart. Unlike some resorts, which have never actually been an authentic community with a history, Les Gets has inhabitants who were born and bred there, and whose antecedents stretch back in the town further than they may care to remember! The village lies in the stunning countryside of the French Alps, where the views are spectacular and the air is sweet and clear, whatever the season.

Great skiing for all levels!

The resort of Les Gets caters for all levels of skiers, and for all ages. There are 220 lifts to the pistes, and there are over 650 kilometres of pisted slopes, so there is plenty to keep you occupied! The runs are set at various levels, with good facilities for intermediate and beginning level skiers. The resort hosts several ski schools and children's clubs, and has a very family friendly atmosphere.

A lively social scene

Although it does not have as many facilities as some of its larger neighbours, Les Gets still manages to offer plenty for its residents to do. All basic requirements are on site, with banking facilities, a supermarket, a range of shops for clothing, crafts and gifts, and there is a good selection of bars and restaurants for that all important "après ski". There is even a disco, where the young (or the young at heart!) can boogie the night away! The town has a cinema and an ice rink too, so you are unlikely to feel bored.

Summer pleasures

The town is principally known as ski resort, but it is quite delightful in summer too, a time when the Alps are quieter and, some say, even prettier than in winter. If skiing and snow sports are not your thing, or if you are simply looking for new ways to enjoy the months from April to December when the snow is not thick enough for skiing, you could do worse than be in Les Gets. The mountains are beautiful in their summer greens, and the air is cool and clear. There are sports, such as mountain biking and hill walking to enjoy, and for mountain bike enthusiasts there are the world championships to watch.

How to get there

The best way to reach Les Gets is to travel by air to Geneva, which has direct flights with several UK airlines, including British Airways, easyJet, flybe, Jet2, and Aer Lingus. It is also possible to travel by TGV to Lyon, from where you can take a local train to Bourg St Maurice, the gateway town to the Alps.

Property prices and availability in and around Les Gets

Property prices in Les Gets tend to be high, as they do in most of the Alpine resorts. The upside of this is that there is a good rental potential for property here, which can be offset against the initial purchase price. Most of the properties available are chalet style apartments and houses, although there are some older types of properties in the centre of the town. Demand for these can be high, so buy swiftly when they come onto the market!
