Lugrin has the good fortune to be situated right on the shores of the vast Lake Geneva, in one of the most desirable spots in the French Alps. The town offers access to all the best attractions of the Haute-Savoie department, with excellent ski resorts just ten minutes away, and all the pleasures afforded by Lake Geneva on the doorstep.
If the setting is spectacular, so is the town itself. No newcomer to the world (as are many soulless purpose-built Alpine resorts), Lugrin is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy traditional surroundings and heritage, excellent facilities and still have great skiing on hand within minutes, or who dreams of a lakeside home with mountain views.
Sights in Lugrin include the beautifully restored 12th century church, which is home to a number of exhibitions at various times, a neo classical church, old chapels and no less than three chateaux. Many elegant old houses also grace the town. Lugrin has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants for the enjoyment of its residents and visitors. There are also schools, health care services and all the usual necessities.
There is so much available to do in Lugrin that you may not want to go any further afield, with all the water-based sports on the lake right at your feet, but the surrounding area also suggests places to visit and things to do. Skiing, of course, is one option in the winter months, and many other snow-based activities can be accessed within minutes of the town. Summer time in the mountains offers the options of walking, climbing, pony trekking and mountain biking among other sports.
The famous spa town of Evian les Bains is nearby and well worth a visit, especially if you have a mind to take the waters or treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment. The Swiss border is just ten kilometres distant, making it possible to get a glimpse of Switzerland for a little variety.
The nearest airports are located in Geneva, Lyon and Chambéry, with Geneva being the closest. These are served by a multitude of airlines between them. Trains run into various towns around the Haute-Savoie, with TGV stations in Lyon and Geneva linking to many local services. Lugrin lies on the lakeside road, the D1005.
Property in the Alps in such desirable locations usually does tend to come at a price. However, at the time of writing, there is a very attractive house with lake views offered for sale at just 199,000 Euros, which shows that bargains can sometimes be found. In fact, contrary to expectations, there are some very reasonably priced properties around Lugrin, although such is the popularity of the town that they may not remain on the market for too long. The town is perfect for holidaymakers, and so the potential for renting the property out to offset purchase costs is ever present.
