The best of lakes and mountains

Thonon-les-Bains lies on the French side of the France-Switzerland border in eastern France. It is a place which offers the very best of the "lakes and mountains" genre! In a setting of astounding natural beauty, this lively and charming town lies on the shores of the beautiful Lake Léman (or Lake Geneva) at the foot of the Alps. With five miles of stunning, clean lakeside beaches and superb water sports facilities, it is no wonder that it holds the esteemed title of "Nautical Resort"!

Vibrant and charming

Thonon-les-Bains manages to be at once charming and vibrant. The town hums and buzzes with life and happenings, yet somehow retains the charm of the Savoyard village that it once was. There are shops, restaurants and entertainment in abundance, and should you want even more of a good thing then don't forget that Geneva is only a short drive away.

La Grande Rue

Thonon's main shopping area is found in the part pedestrianised centre of the town, in La Grande Rue. Here there are not only an excellent selection of shops for your retail therapy, but also attractive fountains, terraces and squares where you can enjoy watching the world go by over a coffee... or a glass of something a little stronger!

Culture and concerts

The summer season brings a series of interesting cultural events to Thonon-les-Bains. Concerts, fairs, markets and theatrical festivals take place in and around the town, many of them in picturesque lakeside settings. In August, for example, there is a superb festival which combines music, theatre and circus entertainment and is held over four days and nights. Wine buffs will enjoy the wine fair, and art lovers have a choice of permanent galleries and exhibitions.

Gastronomy and restaurants

Thonon-les-Bains has numerous excellent restaurants and there are many places where you can enjoy the superb gastronomy of the Savoie region. Try a taste of the local cheeses, particularly the Tomme cheeses and the wonderfully tasty Abondance cheese, made from the milk of locally reared cows. Try also Kohlrabi sausage, and treat yourself to delicious calorie laden creamy fondues... you can diet next week! A lighter option is to eat at one of the pretty lakeside restaurants where you can dine on freshly caught fish and gaze out over one of France's most beautiful vistas at the same time. The local white wines compliment the fresh water fish very well, or you could choose to be virtuous and enjoy a glass of Thonon mineral water instead!

Natural splendour

Thonon-les-Bains lies in an area of such natural splendour that it is hard to know where to begin when you want to get out and about exploring the region. The mountains offer numerous sporting possibilities, with winter sports being very popular, and there are also more unusual activities such as paragliding and Nordic walking to try. You could, of course, choose to relax lakeside and enjoy the scenery, or to explore on horseback or a mountain bike. Those who wish to venture out onto the water can try windsurfing, canoeing, sailing and catamaraning! Thonon-les-Bains has some very well equipped sailing schools so there is no excuse not to get your feet wet!

Mineral waters and hydrotherapy

Thonon-les-Bains is famous worldwide for its mineral waters, and chances are you will have bought a bottle or two from your local supermarket. Here, though, you can bottle your own from a fountain! If your rheumatism has been playing up, or you have suffered from nutritional disorders, the hydrotherapy treatments may benefit you too... or simply make a pleasurable experience if you are perfectly healthy!

How to get there

The best way to reach Thonon-les-Bains from the UK is probably to fly into Geneva with BA, easyJet, Aer Lingus, flybe or Jet2. It is also possible to travel by Eurostar to Paris, then take a TGV to Lyon.
