The picturesque village and ski resort of Chamrousse was the 1966 venue for the Winter Olympics. The resort is small and friendly, well suited to family parties and has around 100 kilometres of on piste skiing for all abilities of skiers. In spite of its Olympic fame, the resort is not well known to visitors from the UK, and is relatively uncrowded, even in high season.
Chamrousse is set in spectacular surroundings, making an authentic and idyllic backdrop to its facilities. Being set at high altitude (1,750 metres), the resort's pistes are well supplied with snow throughout a long season. The village itself is made up of fairly modern buildings, but which blend sympathetically and harmoniously with the surroundings. And the views over the Grenoble valley are delightful.
Chamrousse is just a small resort, but it offers everything that you are likely to need. There are a number of shops selling groceries and basic provisions plus health services and ski hire shops. Although the resort is more family oriented than angled towards extreme party goers, there are plenty of friendly bars and good restaurants where a low key après ski can be enjoyed.
Chamrousse has a cinema and a weekly Tuesday market for those who enjoy such leisurely pursuits. The village also has a spa centre where you can soothe those muscles that have worked too hard on the slopes.
With around 100 kilometres of pistes catering for all levels of skiers from beginners to experts, Chamrousse has something to please everyone. The skiing is made up of the two ski areas of Recoin and Rocher Béranger and offers eight green runs, sixteen blue runs, sixteen red runs and six black runs. The resort is also well supplied with lifts.
If you feel like a change from skiing, there are plenty of other things to do from a base in Chamrousse. The outdoor skating rink provides lots of fun for kids as well as adults, while other activities include snow mobiling, ice driving and paragliding. Even dog sledding may be on the agenda if you fancy trying something different. And, if you've got youngsters in tow, why not take them along to the tree top adventure park? It's bound to be a hit!
The department of Isère has some beautiful scenery, and it's well worth taking a day away from the pistes to enjoy a look around the area. If you're feeling adventurous, you can take an excursion to see a fabulous ice waterfall near to Chamrousse, aided by an expert guide. The city of Grenoble is a "must visit". Explore the Bastille Fort where you can climb the 400 steps to get there or take the easy way out and ascend by cable car.
The Vercors Regional Park is a protected natural area which is just brimming with stunning countryside. Here, as well as taking in the clear air and relaxing amid fresh green mountain pastures, it's possible to discover mysterious caves and grottoes. Finally, if you are a keen cyclist you can attempt to emulate the heroic riders of the Tour de France and climb the notorious Alpe d'Huez on two wheels.
There are three airports within easy reach of Chamrousse. These are Grenoble, Lyon and Chambéry. Grenoble is the nearest by far, and is served by Flybe and easyJet. Lovers of train travel can hop onto a train in London and with just two changes at Paris and Lyon, can arrive at Grenoble. From Grenoble a bus will take you to the resort. There is also a ski train in season to Bourg St Maurice. If you're driving to Chamrousse, the nearest major road is the A41, although the village itself is found on the D111. Remember you may need snow chains.
The market in 2012 offers some very attractive and affordable properties in Chamrousse. Currently (April 2012) on offer is a two bedroom apartment in a complex, with a swimming pool and great access to the lifts and slopes. At a price of just 125,000 Euros, Chamrousse has to be worth considering if you're looking for a ski property!

Chamrousse is situated in the east of France. It lies slightly to the south and east of the centre of the Isère department.

Access: By air: Fly to Grenoble. By rail: Take a train to Grenoble, changing at Paris and Lyon. A bus will take you on to Chamrousse. There is also a ski train in season to Bourg St Maurice. By road: The resort lies on the D111, not far from the A41.
Economy: The economy is based on skiing and mountain tourism.
Interesting fact: The 1966 Winter Olympics were held in Chamrousse.
