Brides les Bains is a popular spa town that lies in the Savoie department of the French Alps, but is so much more besides. Conveniently located for access to Meribel and its terrific skiing, Brides les Bains is also home to history and heritage, a charming Savoyard culture and is set in beautiful surroundings.
Brides les Bains is well equipped with local shops (including a supermarket), ski and sports hire locations, bars, cafés and restaurants. There are even a couple of lively night clubs and a casino, so all tastes are catered for when it comes to après ski or nightlife and relaxation. Of course, as it is a spa town, spa treatments are available. Local services are also on hand, with doctors, pharmacists and all the usual requirements.
There are some historical points of interest in the town as well, notably the mediaeval church and an unusual statue constructed out of piping. Natural heritage is rich, with glorious mountains, valleys and the spa springs.
The Savoie and the area directly around Brides les Bains is a fantastic hunting ground for interesting places to go, for sports and outdoor activities to enjoy and a great gastronomy to discover. Places to visit include the capital city of Chambéry, with its atmospheric old quarter and fascinating history; lively Meribel, centre of fun for the skiing and après ski crowds; and the gloriously authentic and picturesque village of Notre Dame de Bellecombe.
Skiing and other snow sports in winter can be accessed easily from Brides les Bains, at any one of a number of local stations, including those at Meribel and Courchevel. In summer time, the activities change with the colours of the views, from skiing and snowboarding in crystal white surroundings to walking or pony trekking in lush, green pastures, fishing in shimmering lakes or paragliding in azure blue skies.
Air travel offers the choice of arriving at Chambéry, Grenoble, Lyon or Geneva, Chambéry is served by Flybe and Jet2; Grenoble by easyJet, Ryanair and Bmi Baby; Geneva by easyJet, British Airways, Aer Lingus, Flybe and Jet2; and Lyon by easyJet, British Airways, Air France, Bmi baby and Bmi. All these towns (along with Moutiers and Bourg Saint Maurice) also have major railway stations. Indeed, if you are travelling by train, the best way to access the village is to take the ski special train to Moutiers from London. Out of the ski season you can change at Paris to a TGV which will take you to the same destination, and from there it is easy to link to the resort. Drivers can find Brides les Bains from the D915 after leaving the N90.
Property around Brides les Bains is nowhere near as pricey as in many better known Alpine towns. At the time of writing (2011), bargains include studios or one bedroom apartments for as little as 80,000 Euros, while even a house can cost just 130,000 Euros.
