Saint Bon Tarentaise offers savoyard authenticity

If you're looking to combine Savoyard authenticity with all the amenities and fantastic skiing available in the Courchevel resorts of the Three Valleys domain, then little known Saint Bon Tarentaise might be exactly what you're hoping to find. Picture postcard pretty and ideally located just a few minutes from the ski lifts, Saint Bon offers a true taste of Savoyard living. Less touristy and much calmer than the other resorts and villages, Saint Bon Tarentaise makes a lovely base for a family holiday.

A charming village with heritage to uncover

It's the quietest and the least well known of the Courchevel villages, but Saint Bon Tarentaise has its own heritage and charm. In fact, for those who prefer the peaceful life from the busy atmosphere of the popular resorts, Saint Bon is just about perfect. The village itself doesn't offer a lot in the form of bars, shops and restaurants, but all of these and more can be found in Courchevel Le Praz, and even more higher up the mountain in the busiest Courchevel resorts. The traditional architecture of Saint Bon Tarentaise is exactly what you'd expect of a little Savoyard village. The church and the little chapel are typical and interesting, while elsewhere the Les Mazots and La Groupille barn (traditional wooden agricultural buildings, now listed as historic monuments) are definitely worth seeing.

What to see and do in and near Saint Bon Tarentaise

Quiet as the village is, you will never lack for something to do if you base yourself here. All you have to do is hop onto a free navette bus and head to your choice of the Courchevel resorts. Here there are endless sports and leisure opportunities, shops, bars and restaurants. The skiing of Courchevel and the Three Valleys is renowned as being amongst the best in Europe, and there are also opportunities to try many other Alpine sports in any season. It is possible to ski into Saint Bon Tarentaise via a red run, but you do need to take the bus back to Le Praz for the lifts if you haven't had enough of the slopes at that point! But if you've had a hard day's skiing already and are longing for a relaxing evening by the fire in your chalet, what better way to end your day!

Explore further afield and sample wonderful wines and cheeses

Leaving the Courchevel resorts and their myriad activities behind, you might choose to visit any number of famous and less famous places in this part of the Alps. The village lies in the glorious Parc National de la Vanoise, so there is no shortage of breath-taking scenery to discover, not to mention a rich variety of superb wines and cheeses. You could take a day to explore Geneva, and don't forget - even Italy is not far away.

How to get there

Airports to choose from are Chambéry, Grenoble, Geneva and Lyon Saint Exupéry. If the TGV appeals more than flying, there is a station nearby at Moutiers. For drivers, the N90 is the closest major motorway, with the village itself found on the D91A.

Property prices and availability in and around Saint Bon Tarentaise

The village's proximity to Courchevel and the popularity of the area means that property is not the cheapest in France. However, that said, the highest property prices in the area tend to be at the highest altitude, and with Saint Bon being the lowest situated of the villages, a bargain may just be on the cards. Property in or near to the village tends to hold its value well, and there are always rental possibilities to help offset initial buying costs, as this is one of the most desirable areas of France.
