The little ski resort of Ste Foy Tarentaise, in the Savoie department of the French Alps, is a traditional and picturesque village that is simply too good to pass by. For many years though, skiers have been doing just this, barely offering Ste Foy a glance as they shuttle between Bourg Saint Maurice and the big resorts such as Tignes or Chambéry, headed for their concrete apartment blocks and interminable lift queues, little knowing, perhaps, of the splendid and comparatively queue free skiing taking place under their very noses.
Ste Foy Tarentaise, with its tranquil air and traditional approach to life may not be to everyone's taste, but if the idea of a little calmness and some truly challenging skiing appeals, then this little gem is definitely worth considering.
Ste Foy Tarentaise is a pretty and traditional village, where the ski facilities are being constantly updated and improved, and where the lifestyle is as laid back and enjoyable as the scenery is picturesque. If you want to couple superb skiing with a genuine Alpine experience, look no further. The nightlife, of course, isn't a patch on the big resorts, at least if you are thinking of raucous and bustling clubs and pubs, but there are a few good little restaurants and bars so your fun certainly isn't over when you take off your skis for the evening.
It used to be the case that the resort was primarily the preserve of the expert off piste skiers, and certainly it is still superb for advanced skiers who like a bit of a challenge, but facilities for other levels are improving and increasing all the time. Beginners now have the benefit of a lovely gentle nursery slope, and a "magic carpet" lift which makes getting back to the top really easy!
You can simply enjoy the village's historic buildings, such as the village church, and drink in the beautiful mountain views, or get a little more active and consider one or more of a great selection of sports and leisure activities found in or close to Ste Foy Tarentaise. With access to everything from golf to rock climbing, you will never be bored, winter or summer!
The airport at Chambéry is served by flybe and Jet2, who operate flights from the UK. There are several other airports you may wish to consider if you need a wider choice of airline or departure point than is offered by these two, and these include Lyon, St Etienne, Geneva and Grenoble. Lyon is served by Air France, British Airways, easyJet and bmi; St Etienne is served by Ryanair; Geneva by British Airways, Air France, easyJet, flybe, Jet2 and Aer Lingus; and Grenoble by Ryanair and easyJet. Bourg St Maurice is the station for the Eurostar ski special train that brings you all the way from the UK, so rail travel is another great choice, as Bourg St Maurice is close by.
Everybody knows that the Alps are not the best place to seek cheap property, but there are, of course, degrees of expensive, and Ste Foy offers some more reasonable propositions than certain better known resorts. The apartments and chalets on offer in Ste Foy are set to increase in value too, as the resort is definitely "up and coming".
