Valmorel - one of the Savoie's prettiest resorts

When you think of a purpose built ski resort, images of concrete apartment blocks come to mind, which, while practical, can often give a rather soulless look. The village of Valmorel, built precisely to be a ski and summer resort to regenerate the area in 1976, is an exception to this rule, however. It was carefully created to resemble an authentic old Savoyard village with wooden chalets sporting traditional slate roofs and features.

Glorious in both summer and winter

Set in the glorious surroundings of the Tarentaise Valley, the village has excellent access to the slopes as well as great facilities in and about the resort. And although it is often called a ski resort, Valmorel is equally popular in summer for other mountain sports and holidays.

Après ski scene is alive and well

The atmosphere of Valmorel is said to be a little more peaceful and laid back than in some ski resorts, which tends to increase its appeal to families and couples. That said, though, there are plenty of bars and restaurants for an enjoyable après ski scene, and there is a nightclub for those who want to enjoy their social life deep into the night. There is also a cinema.

Amenities available including two spas

The main street is a traffic free zone, making it safer for children, and all shops and services are on hand including a small supermarket. Two spas offer welcome relaxing treatments, so you can pamper those tired muscles after hard days skiing or walking. There is no historical architecture as such, due to the relatively young age of the resort, but you don't have to go far to find a beautiful natural heritage. The village is well known for its superb nature and walking trails amid the glorious pine forests and snowy peaks.

Skiing and snowboarding in the winter

Winter sports accessible from Valmorel include skiing, of course, the resort offering excellent downhill and cross country skiing with a good complement of lifts, gondolas and chairlifts. Snowboarding is also popular here, and both ski and snowboarding lessons are available for all ages and abilities.

Walking, climbing and mountain biking in the summer

In summer, the village is still a great place to be. Although the land has changed from white to green there is plenty to do and to enjoy. Activities available in the warmer months include walking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing and water sports. The picturesque nature of the countryside surrounding the resort offers an exceptional environment for exploring the great outdoors.

How to get there

The airports of Chambéry, Grenoble, Geneva and Lyon are all within reach. Chambéry is served by British Airways, Jet2 and Flybe; Grenoble by easyJet, BMI and Ryanair; and Geneva and Lyon by a variety of airlines. Rail travel will take you to Grenoble on the TGV, or there are winter ski special services to Moûtiers. Drivers can find the village on the D95 after leaving the main N90.

Property prices and availability in and around Valmorel

The Alpine ski resorts are often highly priced when it comes to property, but in and around Valmorel prices are frequently surprisingly reasonable. Just outside the village is a great little village property, priced at just 83,930 Euros (at the time of writing, 2011) while even a luxury newly built chalet with three double bedrooms and extra mezzanine sleeping areas is for sale at just 390,000 Euros, thus comparing very well with other locations nearby.
