Beaumont du Périgord is situated in the south-west of the lovely Dordogne department in south-west France. It is a pretty and lively little bastide town, constructed around a central square in the time honoured fashion. The town was built around the end of the 13th century, and still bears many of the hallmarks of its history.
Beaumont is not a large town, yet it has some interesting old buildings that make it worth a little of your time and attention, as well as being a very pleasant and well equipped town in which to live or stay. Visit the church, or take a look at the old convent which now does duty as a retirement home. If you look closely, you may notice that the windows of this building are decorated with shell designs, a symbol significant to the pilgrims who would pass by on their way to Compostela. Beaumont still retains parts of the old ramparts that were an important part of its defence, and there is also a tower and many old houses that indicate the intriguing past of the region.
Beaumont should not just be consigned to the history books, however, despite its interesting historical features. There is plenty to please and serve the modern day community too, with a good range of shops, general amenities such as banks, doctors and other necessities, and a couple of excellent restaurants too for those times when you just want to treat yourself and escape the drudgery of the kitchen. It's always good to know that you don't have to travel far!
Beaumont makes a good base for further exploration of the Périgord, and there are plenty of interesting places to visit within easy reach of the town. Bergerac is the main town in the area, and a very pleasant place to spend time as well as having excellent facilities. Other places worth seeing include Sarlat la Canéda, the beautiful mediaeval town that has been the set for at least a couple of top flight films. The fairy tale Château de Bannes is close at hand too, and makes an atmospheric sight. The Périgord countryside is worth exploring too, with the wonderful Black Périgord lying just to the east.
The region offers lots of activities for those who like to get up and do something rather than just enjoy the more sedentary pleasures of eating, drinking and sightseeing. Close to Beaumont you can find access to horse-riding, swimming, golf, cycling, walking, tennis, petanque and many more activities.
There are plenty of easy ways to reach Beaumont from the UK. Flying offers the options of landing in Bergerac Airport or Brive Vallée de la Dordogne Airport. Bergerac is currently served by Ryanair and flybe, while Brive operates summer services to the UK with CityJet, and from 2011 with Jet2. Beaumont is only a 25-minute drive from Bergerac Airport, driving via Faux and Saint Nexans. Rail travel is another possibility with the nearest station being at Couze et Saint Front, and another at Lalinde. The latter offers a better service, with trains running west towards Bergerac, Libourne and Bordeaux and east towards Sarlat. If you are driving (and this is always a good idea as it affords you the ability to get out and about to explore the wider areas), the excellent A20 auto route is the one to follow.
The Dordogne in general is a very popular area for property purchase, particularly with the British market. This has had the effect of pushing prices up, but if you have set your heart on a property here don't be put off, it is still possible to find some excellent properties at reasonable prices. Holiday makers love the region too, so it is always worth considering making your property pay for itself by letting it out when you are not in residence yourself.
