For buying and selling property in Hautefort
Hautefort (literally "the high fort"), is a lovely Perigordian village that actually lives up to its name. Perched up on top of a hill in the pretty countryside of the northern Dordogne, Hautefort has a fabulous castle as its most prominent feature. The rest of the village is well worth exploring too, being built in typical Perigordian style with quaint little streets, colourful floral displays in summer and lots of authentic charm.
You have to see the chateau, of which the villagers are very proud. The history of the castle and the village go back a long way, and a visit to this chateau is an excellent way to relive the past and discover more about this village and its locality. The chateau has impressive gardens, laid out in the classically formal French style, and a fabulous collection of art and tapestries. You can also learn about the fire that all but destroyed the castle, and about how the villagers all came together to help to rescue and restore it.
The museum of medicine is also an interesting place to visit, and may even help the kids with their knowledge of history!
Contemporary life is well developed in Hautefort, and there are shops, including a supermarket, as well as bars and some good restaurants in the village. Other pleasures include an open air cinema and theatre, atmospheric night markets and numerous lively parties and cultural events.
Close to Hautefort you can find a large and very beautiful lake, a pony trekking centre, campsites and some superb walking trails. A little further afield you will also have access to golf courses, swimming pools and large sports centres.
The airports of Bergerac, Limoges and Bordeaux are all near enough to be possible arrival points, and they are served by various airlines including the budget options, making air travel a cheap and convenient way to reach the village. Bergerac is served by flybe and Ryanair; Limoges by Ryanair and flybe; and Bordeaux by British Airways, bmibaby, Aer Lingus, easyJet and flybe. The airport being built at Brive la Gaillarde may also be of use in the future. Or you could choose to travel by super fast TGV to Angoulême. If you are driving, you will find the village situated near the D71, the nearest major road being the A89.
The Dordogne is often thought of a an expensive place for property, but there are still bargains to be had if you look carefully and are prepared to act swiftly. Hautefort has a couple of properties available for under 100,000 Euros at the time of writing... not something you will easily find in the UK!
