La Coquille - a peaceful Perigordian town

La Coquille is a pretty and peaceful little town that is found in the green and glorious countryside of the north Perigord, in the much celebrated Dordogne department of south-west France. The buildings and atmosphere of La Coquille are characteristic of the area, authentic and unspoiled.

Pilgrim connections

Once upon a time, the town was an important stopping place on one of the main pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostela, hence the name La Coquille, which is also the name of the pilgrim symbol, the scallop shell. Aside from its pilgrim connections, La Coquille has another claim to fame. It has a church with a connection to Richard the Lionheart!

A simple and good village life

La Coquille is a small town in the big scheme of things, not much more than a village, but it has an excellent range of shops and amenities that make village life simple and good. Quite frequently, small country towns in rural southern France have very little in the way of shops and services, so it's good to know that here is a place where you don't have to get the car out every time you need a few basics from the shops or you want to take a little cash out of the bank.

Wining and dining in La Coquille

There are a couple of good restaurants in the town for those occasions when you want to treat yourself and let someone else do the cooking, and many more in the nearby towns and villages to provide plenty of choice for dining out.

Don't forget to try La Coquille's truffles

While on the subject of dining, take note that La Coquille is well known for its tasty truffles, a rare delicacy that brilliantly complements many local specialities. Should you decide that you want to recreate these delicious dishes in your own kitchen in La Coquille, all the necessary ingredients can be found on the market stalls of the traditional market which is held each Thursday.

Out and about

The Perigord is a largely rural area, but there is no shortage of things to do and places to see. You'll find a multitude of sporting and leisure activities on offer near La Coquille, and quite a few of these are centred around the Lac Ruffiac. Here you can choose from kayaking, swimming, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, horse-riding and rock climbing... and if that isn't enough to keep you happy you can also find golf courses nearby, tennis courts and mountain bike hire. Places to add to the itinerary include the famous Lascaux Caves, the market town of Thiviers, and the lovely city of Limoges, famed for its fine porcelain.

How to get there

Limoges has the nearest airport offering direct flights from the UK, and the good news for the budget conscious is that the economy airline Ryanair can fly you here for rock bottom prices. Ryanair also serves Angoulême, while Flybe also serves Limoges. Limoges has a railway station (as does Bordeaux), and from here you can take a connecting train to La Coquille. Finally, if you are approaching by car, you will find the town from the N21.

Property prices and availability in and around La Coquille

Conventional wisdom has it that the Dordogne is a very expensive place when it comes to property, but if you take a good look at what is on the market at the moment you could be pleasantly surprised. A beautiful Perigordian farmhouse (admittedly in need of a little refreshing), complete with a barn and other outbuildings for less than 150,000 Euros in one of France's most sought after regions? Sounds like a bargain!
