La Roche Chalais - a market town with a lively atmosphere

The market town of La Roche Chalais is just a smallish town, with less than 3,000 inhabitants, but it has a real buzz to its atmosphere and excellent facilities. It lies in the region known as the White Perigord, or the Perigord Blanc, beside the beautiful and historically intriguing Fôret de Double.

Markets and supermarkets

As well as the traditional Saturday market in La Roche Chalais, there is a supermarket for the convenience of everyday shopping. There is also a range of small shops, with all the usual French specialities at your disposal... a boulangerie, a boucherie, la poste, a tabac and, essentially for the French, two hairdressers so you can keep your coiffure immaculate!

And time for a treat?

La Roche Chalais invites you to treat yourself to a taste of the wonderful and famous gastronomy of the region. The Dordogne is noted for its duck dishes, its walnuts, truffles and other rich and tasty goodies, so it is good to know that this little town offers a choice of no less than three restaurants. The wine list will be pretty hot too, when you consider that the Bordeaux and Bergerac wine regions are on the doorstep!

Out and about

The region offers a great variety of activities, sporting and cultural. There are forests to explore, most notably the vast Fôret de Double, which has a fascinating history as a hiding place for refugees from war and religious persecution over many centuries. There are nature trails to follow and lakes and rivers for swimming, fishing and boating. And the unspoiled countryside is a treat for cyclists and horse-riders as well. The leisure lake "Parcaul" which is just about a fifteen-minute drive from La Roche Chalais has lots to do, especially for the kids, with a little train, a water slide and even crazy golf!

Chateaux, fêtes and wine

For the less sporty there are beautiful chateaux to discover, fêtes and festivals held in most of the towns and villages over the summer, and the great wine estates of St Emilion, Bergerac and Bordeaux all within reach.

How to get there

If you wish to fly, the airports of Bordeaux and Bergerac are your best choice of arrival point. Bergerac is served by Ryanair and flybe, while Bordeaux is served by British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet. If you prefer the train, you can take the Eurostar to Paris, and then change to a TGV which will take you to Angoulême or to Libourne. From here you can take a local train closer to your destination, although unfortunately La Roche Chalais does not have its own railway station. Drivers meanwhile, should look for the A89 auto route which runs close to La Roche Chalais.
