The lovely market town of Terrasson Lavilledieu is found in the scenic Perigord Noir area of the department of the Dordogne in the south-west of France. Terrasson Lavilledieu is delightfully pretty, but its greatest attraction is not its excellent market or its traditional architecture and charming old streets, but its unusual "Gardens of the Imagination", which draw visitors from all over the world.
The town offers a good deal of things to see and do, although without doubt the evocatively named "Gardens of the Imagination" are the most unusual of its attractions. The gardens, which feature thirteen tableaux depicting the history of gardens, uses natural materials to create flower gardens, topiary, water features and wooded areas to tell its myths and legends. The designer of the gardens is no less a personage than Kathryn Gustafson, the creative force behind the Princess Diana Memorial in London.
Other than the gardens, take time to see the beautiful churches and Renaissance houses and pay a visit to the delicious Museum of Chocolate. The River Vezere and the old bridge that spans it add even more charm.
All shops and services are found within the town, including useful supermarkets and a bank. There is also a cinema, a library, an open-air swimming pool and tennis courts. Meanwhile, every Thursday morning sees the traditional street market set up its colourful stalls in the Place de la Libération. Terrasson has numerous bars, cafés and restaurants too, where you can enjoy the best of the local food, drink and social life!
The Dordogne has long been a favoured destination for tourism, and the area is so rich in natural beauty and history that this is never surprising. The forests and rivers provide a superb backdrop to an outdoor lifestyle, and summer temperatures are usually settled around a very pleasant 27 degrees C. Sports available locally include sailing, swimming, walking, horse-riding, fishing, golf and canoeing. Places to see nearby might include the pretty market town of Montignac and the nearby amazing Lascaux Caves.
The nearest airport which offers direct flights from the UK is Bergerac, but it is also possible to fly to Limoges and Bordeaux, or even Toulouse or Poitiers. There is a new airport due to open just south of Brive La Gaillarde which will also no doubt be useful. All of these towns also have major train stations, while drivers will find the town easily from the A89 auto route, lying on the D6089.
Despite the fact that the Dordogne's popularity has caused property prices to become high in certain areas and at times in the recent past, the current recession has levelled things somewhat, persuading sellers to put more realistic values on their properties. The area now offers some excellent properties at very fair prices.
