For buying and selling property in Thenon
The little town of Thenon lies on a hill in the south-west of France, in the beautiful Perigord Noir (Black Perigord) area of the Dordogne department. Thenon is an historic town, and many of its buildings, including the village church, are original and of typical Perigordian character. Thenon glories in the most delightful of surroundings, with a forest and a lovely lake right on the doorstep. The area is a haven for wildlife, and is noted for a proliferation of red squirrels, wild orchids and the most cherished of gourmet treasures, truffles.
Thenon is called a market town, although it is really little more than a good sized village. However, there are a surprising number of amenities, and the town serves as a centre for many of the nearby hamlets and little villages which often have no village shop of their own. In Thenon there is a traditional street market, a number of small shops and a supermarket, so buying your everyday "needs and feeds" is a simple matter.
The market, which is held every Tuesday, is a colourful and characterful affair, and draws both stallholders and customers from a wide area. Thenon has a well established agricultural tradition too, and hosts seasonal farmers' markets packed with local produce in addition to the general markets. The town is also well supplied with cafés and restaurants, making it a lively community centre.
Just below Thenon is a pretty lake, perfect for swimming and sunbathing on its beaches, and here too is a romantic open air restaurant in the summer. What better place to spend a balmy evening than dining al fresco while the waters of the lake lap gently near your feet? The rolling hills of the Dordogne are ideal for walking, cycling and horse-riding, and there are some delightful walks through the forests near the town as well. Hunt for truffles or rare orchids, spot a red squirrel or two, or simply enjoy the plentiful beauties of nature that benefit this lovely area.
A little further afield you could visit Montignac, the pre-historic caves of Lascaux, or pick up some paddles and take a canoe along the River Vezere. Important cities and towns within reach of Thenon include Bordeaux and Bergerac.
Bergerac, Bordeaux, Limoges and even Toulouse are all possible arrival points if travelling from the UK, whether by air or rail. The new airport just south of Brive la Gaillard should also be of use when it eventually opens. Drivers will find Thenon easily from the A89 auto route.
By and large, the Dordogne has come to be known as an expensive place to buy property, as its charms are well documented and its reputation as a favourite second home for British people especially, has spread far and wide and created a somewhat overheated market in certain areas. However, Thenon is less well known than celebrated towns such as Sarlat la Canéda, and property here is often found at very reasonable prices.
