Vergt - a town of strawberries

The small market town of Vergt, in the Dordogne department of south-west France's Aquitaine region, is renowned for its delicious strawberries. So much so, in fact, that it is known far and wide as the "capital of strawberry growing". Vergt is a typical Dordogne market town, full of character and very picturesque, while the surrounding countryside is lovely and perfect for enjoying any number of activities in the sunshine that bathes the region for a good part of the year.

Friday is market day

Vergt is well supplied with shops and services, having a selection of shops including boulangeries, florists, doctors, schools, a supermarket and many more. The market is held in the traditional style on Fridays, so be sure to get down there early to catch the best of the local produce brought to the town by the local growers and farmers. The main town of Bergerac is within easy reach for much larger facilities and a more cosmopolitan ambience should you desire it every now and then!

Don't miss the strawberry festival

For a little local colour, don't miss the strawberry festival held in early summer each year in the town. For those who enjoy dining out, on the superb cuisine of the Dordogne (think duck, walnuts, fruits, truffles and wine to name just a few of the treats in store!) Vergt offers up a good number of excellent restaurants, and there are also some friendly bars where you can enjoy a glass of local wine and practice your French.

Spectacular countryside to explore

The Dordogne hardly needs an introduction to the British. The department is often referred to as Little England, so beloved is it of British property buyers, holidaymakers and ex-pats. The countryside of the Perigord Blanc (so called due to the large amount of white chalk deposits in the soil) is spectacular, with vast expanses of unspoiled landscapes, woodlands, pastures and fruit farms.

Visit beautiful Sarlat la Canéda

Of the many beautiful towns and villages in the area, one of the most famous is Sarlat la Canéda, officially named as one of France's most beautiful towns. It is well worth taking the time to visit. Périgueux is the principle town of the White Perigord, and has a fascinating heritage of both mediaeval and Renaissance buildings.

Activities on offer

There are so many things to do in the area that you are likely to be spoiled for choice if on holiday, and may even decide to put down roots and settle there. The Dordogne's British community has established familiar sports such as cricket, but there are plenty of authentically French activities too, such as petanque championships and numerous festivals based on age old traditions. Sports fans will find golf, horse-riding, sailing and much more within reach of Vergt.

How to get there

Bergerac has both an airport with direct links to the UK and also a TGV rail station, making travelling between the UK and the area easy and economical. Bergerac Airport is served by Ryanair, Flybe and Jet2. If you are driving, the N21 non toll road runs close, with the town lying on the D8. The A89 is the nearest auto route.

Property prices and availability in and around Vergt

In spite of its popularity, property in the Dordogne can be surprisingly affordable. In Vergt, at the time of writing (November 2011), the property market offers a pretty renovated cottage for just 182,500 Euros, and a fabulous watermill to renovate for a price of 183,750 Euros.
