For buying and selling property in Gironde
Gironde is located in the Aquitaine region of southwestern France. It is the largest french department with 2170 miles of rivers and 72 miles of fine coastline. 'Gironde' is home to 1.3 million people. It is named after the estuary that was formed by the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. The department is most famous for its sandy beaches, delectable mussels and fine wines. Summer is hot, with the occasional storm and Winter is usually mild. Gironde is packed with traditional villages, many set among acres of vineyards.
The department is rich in nature and wildlife. The calm lakes juxtaposed with the intense sea, mean that a whole range of water sports are covered. Etang d'Hourtin and Etang de Carcans form the longest lake in France. Otters, which are becoming increasingly rare across France, are often sighted here.
Bordeaux is the capital of Gironde and also where the main wine industry is located. Being a bustling city, it contrasts with the traditional atmosphere found in wine-producing communities. The town is home to a magnitude of elegant shops and fine restaurants, great for sampling a glass or two of local produce.
The port town of Langon is located in the southeast of the department and is the highest point on the river Garonne that remains subject to the coming and goings of the tide. Its cosy gothic cathedral contains a fantastic painting by Zurbaran, discovered by accident in 1966.
Surfing is very popular in the area as Aquitaine's Atlantic coast is considered to be the best surfing spot due to its high waves. If you'd rather find a more relaxing beach, head to the Bassin d'Arcachon, an enormous natural inland sea. If you like mussels this area produces France's fourth largest supply.
Bordeaux is served by several airlines covering most UK airports. Bear in mind that the super comfortable TGV trains take just under three and half hours to travel from Paris to Bordeaux.
Property prices are increasing across the Aquitaine region as it becomes more and more accessible to both the rest of France and the foreign market. There are still many bargain properties up for grabs. The most expensive properties are to be found in the south, along the coast and in Bordeaux.
