The small town of Vayres is an attractive market town that's overlooked by its own historic monument. The imposing Castle of Vayres, along with a picturesque riverside setting, are the stand out features of this little town. Vayres also benefits from a great location within easy reach of the bustling and cosmopolitan wine city of Bordeaux.
Vayres has plenty of amenities, and so makes a good place to relocate or to use as a base for holidays. There are numerous shops and services, including schools, a bank, and a garage. There's the obligatory boulangerie for those essential croissants and baguettes in the morning too! What's more, the Sunday morning market is a weekly occurrence and is always a colourful and entertaining shopping experience. The village also caters for anyone wishing to dine out, with several restaurants and cafés offering a range of cuisines. Of course, there may be days when you want to shop, dine or wander in a larger town, so it's good to know that Bordeaux, with all its history, wine estates, shops and excellent restaurants is nearby.
The village has sports facilities for tennis, football and indoor sports like judo. There is also a pony club and a children's adventure playground. The village committee is dedicated to putting on cultural events too, so you can look forward to fetes, festivals and concerts throughout the year.
The most celebrated feature of Vayres's heritage is its wonderful mediaeval castle. The Chateau de Vayres is a listed historic monument, and has grounds of outstanding natural beauty. It can be visited and is open (guided tours available) from Easter to November. You'll need to check the website for actual opening times or to make a booking for a group visit. The town has other sights of interest too. The Church of John the Baptist began its life in the 11th century, having bits added all the way through to its recent restoration. The nearby river port of Saint Pardon is an interesting feature, and the tidal bore that occurs regularly, marks this bit of the river out as something different. The fine wines of the Graves de Vayres appellation are also worth discovering and sampling!
Aquitaine is an historic and stunning region, and a base in Vayres makes much of this wonderful part of France accessible. The city of Bordeaux, the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic coast are all within reach, while nearby you can also visit the department of the Dordogne, the British favourite as shown recently on TV in the series "Little England". Pretty villages and historic towns are all there, waiting to be discovered. Then there are rivers and lakes for water sports, glorious country walks, golf courses... what more could you want?
You can travel by air, or rail (TGV) to Bordeaux or Bergerac, and continue by rail using local services. For drivers, the A89 and N89 motorways are close.
Traditionally, the Gironde is a fairly expensive department. But, like everywhere else in France (as in Britain!) in these troubled economic times, many property prices have been reduced, so 2013 could be a good time to snap up a bargain in Vayres.
