For buying and selling property in Mugron
Mugron is a small and peaceful town that is found in the south-west of France, in the little known department of the Landes, in the south of the Aquitaine region. Totally unspoiled and set in beautiful surroundings, Mugron is a perfect place to escape the stresses of modern life, yet it has the convenience of being close to large towns, and the appeal of being near to the Atlantic beaches and resorts.
Mugron may be quiet and unassuming, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have some interesting buildings and other sights to discover. For example, there is a traditional bullring, and you will quickly discover that the region is known for its love of the special type of (bloodless) bullfighting known as "Cours Landaise". Mugron also has a very pretty church, and a walk around town will give you time to admire many other lovely old buildings.
Mugron is well equipped to make life easy and to make sure all your everyday needs are met. The town has a couple of supermarkets, a butcher and bakery, a post office, a pizza takeaway and a village bar, which is a great place to meet the locals and brush up on your language skills. Of course, if you need larger town facilities you can access the popular tourist towns of Dax and Mont de Marsan, both of which lie conveniently close.
The gastronomy of the Basque region of France is justly celebrated as perhaps the best in France, and who would argue? Basque food, with its Spanish influences, tends to be spicier and more colourful than traditional French fare, and often uses the delicious local "espellette" chillies for added interest! The area around Mugron offers many superb restaurants where you can sample this famous fare, but if there is one piece of advice that is worth taking, don't reject the more rustic and less sophisticated establishments, as these little "auberges" can frequently beat the socks off the posher joints when it comes to food!
France is famed for its wines, and Mugron is no exception. The little town is the centre for the "Chalosse" region wine production, and as well as enjoying a bottle or two with your meals you may like to visit the "Caves des Vignerons des Coteaux de Chalosse", where you can taste the local wines and learn a little about the processes involved in producing them.
The department of the Landes is an ideal base for anyone who loves the peace of the countryside and wild seascapes of the south-west of France. The Atlantic beaches, with great surf and a buzzing social life for the young and trendy, are within a very reasonable drive. And there are many lovely beauty spots and fascinating towns to visit too, such as the well known town of Mont de Marsan, reputedly one of the most beautiful in France. It is also possible to access the ski resorts of the Pyrénées, and Spain is near enough for a flying visit!
You can fly to Pau, Biarritz or to Bordeaux. Pau and Biarritz are both served by Ryanair, and Bordeaux by British Airways, Aer Lingus, easyJet, flybe and bmibaby. Rail travel is another possibility, as the super fast TGV runs to Bayonne, Bordeaux, Biarritz and Toulouse, from where you can catch linking trains to Mont de Marsan. Drivers will find Mugron from the A63 and D824 or the A64 auto route.
As long as you stay away from the coast and the popular towns such as Mont de Marsan, property prices in the region are very reasonable. Many properties around Mugron offer land along with them, so could be of interest to those with animals or an interest in "growing their own"! The town can also be a good place to site a bed and breakfast business, as although a little off the beaten track it is close to major tourist attractions.
