The town of St Sever sits atop a promontory of rock from where it gazes down onto the glorious and seemingly endless pine forests that so epitomise the department of the Landes. Most famous for its abbey, which has been awarded UNESCO World heritage status, the little town is brimming with history, with many lovely and interesting features to discover.
Exploring St Sever on foot is like taking a walk through time, and it is well worth the time it takes to do this. See not just the Abbey of St Sever (though you must indeed see this) but find numerous points of interest along the way. The unusual is common here, with an elegant town house, elaborately balconied, standing alongside unassuming and much humbler homes, and a simple water pump made opulent by the addition of a golden statue.
Here too you will find an imposing marble column dedicated to the memory of General Lamarque, who was born in the town and whose death was the catalyst for the June Rebellion in Paris in 1832. He also became an integral part of the Victor Hugo novel "Les Miserables". There is so much more to see too, so enquire at the Tourist Office to be sure you don't miss anything.
As you walk, remember too to look down, not just around you, as the ground beneath your feet tells a story. Embedded in the pavements of the Rue des Arceaux are little brass representations of Coquilles Saint Jacques, and even more impressively, the floor inside the "Maison Dr Sentex" is a fabulous Roman mosaic.
The town has all the usual shops and amenities including a cinema, library, museum and skate park, as well as health care, schools, banks and supermarkets. Saturday is market day.
There is a good sprinkling of cafés, bars and restaurants too, where you can enjoy the celebrated cuisine of the region. There are many old Armagnac producers in the area as well, and it is a drink to be savoured whether you prefer it as an aperitif or a degustif... the choice is yours.
St Sever is perfectly placed for accessing many beautiful and interesting places, and for taking part in a number of sporting activities too. Walking or horse-riding in the serene beauty of the pine forests is highly recommended, but if you are looking for a little more excitement you could always attend a Cours Landaise bloodless bullfight... well, it's bloodless for the bulls anyway! The town and its environs also offer tennis courts, swimming in pools and rivers, excellent fishing, white water rafting and golf. Near enough for day trips also are the surf resorts of the Atlantic Coast and Basque Spain, not to mention the ski resorts of the Pyrénéan Mountains.
You can fly to Pau, Biarritz or to Bordeaux. These airports are served variously by British Airways, Aer Lingus, easyJet, flybe, bmibaby and Ryanair. Rail travel is another possibility, as the super fast TGV runs to Bayonne, Bordeaux, Biarritz and Toulouse, from where you can catch linking trains to the nearby town of Mont de Marsan. Acess by road is from the N10/A63 or the A64 auto routes.
Property prices are very reasonable, given that Aquitaine is not, in general, a cheap region. Whether you are seeking a building plot for your own dream home, a town house or a country pile, there is bound to be something here to suit, and it won't break the bank either.
