Castillonnès - a pretty bastide town

Castillonnès is a pretty bastide town in an area rich in such traditionally designed towns. It is found in the Lot-et-Garonne department of Aquitaine, in south-west France, and perches assertively on a rocky hill overlooking the lush green valley of the River Dropt. Surrounded by such scenery, and benefiting from its own charms as a traditional bastide, Castillonnès is delightful place to visit or to live.

A new castle for an old castle...

The name of Castillonnès means "new castle", and the town is aptly named as it is built on the site of a ruined castle, high on a rocky hilltop. The town was constructed as a bastide, just before the start of the Hundred Years War, and conforms to the usual pattern of an arcaded central square, a fortified church, and a grid like pattern of streets radiating out from the centre. It is still possible to find some of the remains of the old fortified parts of town, such as the Valets fortified gate, and you will see too that many of the houses have external timbers, creating a most appealing and authentic ambience.

Amenities on offer in Castillonnès

Castillonnès has a good selection of small local shops, including the essential boulangeries for those wonderful freshly baked baguettes. It also has a couple of supermarkets, and offers all the usual services such as schools, health care, banks, cash points and a tourist office.

Castillonnès has a number of restaurants, and in a region with a gastronomy as celebrated as the south-west of France, these will provide you with a truly delicious introduction to the fabulous food and drink of the Lot-et-Garonne. Enjoy rich duck dishes, fresh fruits and traditional pastries, and wash it all down with a glass or two of the excellent Bergerac or "black" Cahors wines.

Cinema and disco too!

Those with teens and twenties in tow may like to know that the town also has a cinema and a disco, so they can watch a film or dance the night away while you sleep off all that rich food and good wine.
