The town of Morlaàs lives a little on past glories, as it still likes to be known as the one time capital of the Béarn region... but this comes more from a sense of pride in its heritage than a lack of more recent accomplishments. History and heritage are of great importance to residents of this region, but the little town of Morlaàs is also a thriving modern community with a successful economy and an excellent quality of life.
Morlaàs has some interesting and historic buildings which recall its past. There is a rather lovely 12th century church, a beautiful stone built town hall and an old half-timbered house constructed in the traditional style. The town was a stopping place for the pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela, and traditionally provided food and shelter to the weary walkers. These days, though, Morlaàs prides itself particularly on providing a healthy environment in which its youth can grow and develop, and has a quality provision of schools and facilities for children and families.
Morlaàs has all the modern facilities that you could wish for, with a good range of shops, supermarkets and other amenities. It's also well equipped with restaurants so that you can settle down to enjoy the justly famed gastronomy of the south-west of France, rich in duck, fruits and cured hams. The wine list is no poor relation in the town's eating establishments either, as with the Madiran appellation on the doorstep you have access to one of France's most delicious red wines... and also the one claimed by doctors to have the biggest health benefits of all the wines in the world!
Morlaàs is close enough to Pau to serve as a dormitory town for those who wish to live in a peaceful rural environment whilst only driving a short distance to work.
There are many activities in which to take part in and around Morlaàs, and also many interesting and beautiful places to visit. In a region blessed with the Pyrénéan Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean as well as being close to the Basque region of Spain, Morlaàs offers skiing, sea sports, sunbathing, mountain walking and cycling, pony trekking and even llama trekking!
You can fly to Pau, Biarritz or to Bordeaux. These airports are served variously by British Airways, Aer Lingus, easyJet, bmibaby and Ryanair. Rail travel is also an option, with the TGV running to Bayonne, Bordeaux, Biarritz and Toulouse. From here you can catch linking trains to Pau, which is not far away. Drivers will find the town on the A64.
Property in Morlaàs is not especially cheap, as the town has a desirable location and the area is justifiably popular with both second home seekers and those looking for a more permanent residence. There are some high quality properties on the market at the time of writing, however, and they still represent good value for money albeit at the middle to higher end of the market.

Interesting fact: Morlaàs was once the capital of the Béarn, before this honour passed to Orthez.
