For buying and selling property in Navarrenx
The town of Navarrenx was the first fortified town to be built in France, back in 1316... around a century before the birth of that best known architect of fortified towns, Vauban. Navarrenx was built on the principles used for the Tuscan fortified towns, and was later further strengthened by Henri d'Albret, King of Navarre, to protect it against attacks by the Spanish. Navarrenx today retains many of its intriguing historical features, and its beautiful setting on the Gave d'Oloron River ensures that it will always be a very desirable location.
As well as its military history, its fortifications, impressive bridge, old walls and canons, gunpowder stores, gatehouses and other related features, Navarrenx is known as a pilgrim town. It lies on the famous route of Santiago de Compostela, and the paths worn by the feet of the faithful for centuries are still trodden here, as modern day pilgrims arrive to take a night's lodging in a hostel or hotel.
The other claim to fame for Navarrenx is the quality of the salmon fishing that can be found here. The leaping salmon in the Gave d'Oloron are legendary, and many fishermen are to be found along its banks, hoping for a delicious catch of the day. Navarrenx also plays host to the World Salmon Fishing Championships, so if you are a keen fisherman this is definitely the place for you.
The Basque gastronomy is considered by many to be the best in France, and it is certainly one of the most colourful and tasty, with its proliferation of brilliantly coloured peppers and piquant chillies. Enjoy tasting it all for yourself at one of the excellent restaurants to be found in Navarrenx. The little town has plenty of good bars, restaurants, shops and a lively and colourful Wednesday market too, with pretty much everything you need, available within the town.
Navarrenx, with its fortunate geographical location and sunny southern climate, offers some interesting sporting activities, with river rafting being very popular. Nearby you can also play golf, go pony trekking, walking, swimming or cycling. The Pyrénées has ski resorts which are fast becoming recognised as a viable alternative to the costly and over populated resorts of the Alps, and the beautiful Atlantic coast is within very reasonable driving distance. All around the town there is glorious scenery, with the river providing a lovely focal point.
You can fly to Pau, Biarritz or Bordeaux. Pau is served by Ryanair; Biarritz by Ryanair; and Bordeaux by British Airways, Aer Lingus, easyJet and flybe. Rail travel is also an option, with the TGV running to Bayonne, Bordeaux, Biarritz and Toulouse. Orthez, which is found nearby, has a railway station for local trains. Drivers will find the town from the A64 auto route.
Property in Navarrenx compares well with many other locations in southern France, being considerably cheaper than either Biarritz to the west or Provence to the east. It is possible to find some very lovely character properties in the area, typical Béarnaise farms and country houses which are not only desirable to own and live in, but also attractive to the rental market as holiday lets.
