Belle Isle en Terre - a riverside location

There is something about a riverside location that brings an extra special atmosphere to any town, and the location of Belle Isle en Terre on the River Guer in Brittany, is no exception. One of Brittany's prettiest little towns, Belle Isle en Terre has typically Breton stone and slate houses, quiet streets and lovely floral displays both in the gardens and in public areas. It benefits not only from its riverside setting, but also from being located just a half an hour's drive from the fabulous Pink Granite Coast.

A good selection of amenities and services

With its population of just over 1,000, Belle Isle en Terre is neither a small village, nor quite a town, rather somewhere between the two. This actually works to its advantage, as it is large enough to sustain a good selection of amenities and services, having schools, shops (including a supermarket for convenience), restaurants, bars, health care services and sports facilities. Belle Isle en Terre, though, is not so large that it loses its village feel, and it is ultimately peaceful and quite unspoilt.

Wednesday is market day

The riverside setting is perfect for walks, and strolling around the town and its environs is a very pleasant pastime enjoyed by many. Things get a bit livelier on Wednesdays, though, as this is market day when suddenly the quiet streets are filled with colourful stalls, and the air is suffused with the aromas of paella, roast chicken and fresh herbs and spices.

Sights and monuments to visit

Belle Isle en Terre is an ancient place, and as such offers some historical sights and buildings to be found. Take a look at the two churches (both dedicated to St Jacques), one from the 18th century and the other from the 19th, or visit the listed monument, the Notre Dame de Pendreo Chapel with its fountain. There are a couple of chateaux, with interesting stories to discover, while around the countryside on the edges of the town there are forests, the "Valley of the Paper Mills", the grave of the early aviator Maurice Nogues, and a fountain trail to follow.

Out and about

In just half an hour you can reach the beaches and resort towns of the Pink Granite Coast, so days at the seaside are very much on the agenda if you are holidaying or living in Belle Isle en Terre. The department also offers leisure lakes where you can sail, fish and swim, golf courses, horse-riding stables and many more activities. Historic and beautiful towns such as Dinan, with its mediaeval walls and streets are easily accessible, or you can do some serious shopping in the lively port town of St Malo.

How to get there

If you want to travel by air to the Côtes d'Armor you can fly to Brest or Dinard direct from the UK, with Brest being the slightly closer of the two airports. Brest is served by Flybe and Ryanair while Dinard is served by Aurigny and Ryanair. Should you prefer the ferry, the ports of Roscoff and St Malo are served by the excellent Brittany Ferries (Roscoff is the closer of the two), while the other northern ferry ports are all within a straightforward drive of Belle Isle en Terre. Drivers can find Belle Isle en Terre from the N12 (E50).

Property prices and availability in and around Belle Isle en Terre
