For buying and selling property in Kergrist Moelou
The picturesque village of Kergrist Moëlou lies in delightfully unspoilt countryside in the Côtes d'Armor department of Brittany in north-west France. Kergrist Moëlou is chocolate box pretty, although you will find the emphasis is on peace and calm rather than a party lifestyle... perfect for those who want to leave the noise and clangour of city life in Britain far behind them. The village is in an inland part of the Côtes d'Armor, so it has remained completely authentic and undiscovered by tourism, leaving it delightfully Breton in character.
The first thing you need to know about being in Kergrist Moëlou is that the nightlife is fantastic. The nightlife being, of course, the hooting of owls, the breeze ruffling the leaves of the trees, the amazingly starry skies that stretch endlessly above you... and the occasional pop of a wine bottle being opened in the garden. Nightclubs, on the other hand, are distinctly lacking... and thank heavens for that. Absolute peace and tranquillity is what you will find in Kergrist Moëlou, and it is all the better for that.
There are a handful of bars, though, where you can enjoy a relaxing glass or two and watch village life pass by. There is an excellent little village shop too, that sells most everyday needs including delicious fresh breads, but for anything else you will have to pop along to nearby Rostrenen, where you can enjoy good shopping, sight seeing, leisure activities and dining. Talking of sight seeing, however, the village church in Kergrist Moëlou itself is worth a mention here. Painstakingly restored, this lovely Gothic church draws visitors to admire its carvings and gargoyles, and to climb the tower to obtain amazing views of the surrounding countryside.
There are few places in France so beloved of the British people as Brittany. There is something of a home from home about the region, with an added "Je ne sais quoi" which makes it just different enough to be exciting. Although Kergrist lies inland, the coast is easily accessed from a base in the village, and there are many wonderful beaches and lively resort towns close enough for day trips. Nearer home is Rostrenen, lively but never too touristy, and the beautiful village of Locarn.
If you want to incorporate a little physical activity into all this rest and relaxation, the village is just minutes away from Europe's largest man-made leisure lake, Lake Guerlédan, where you can sail, swim and fish or simply soak up the atmosphere. You'll find golf courses nearby too, and opportunities to hire bicycles or to go horse-riding, which are also wonderful ways to enjoy the area.
You can fly direct from the UK to Dinard, Brest or Rennes. Brest is served by Flybe and Ryanair; Dinard by Ryanair and Aurigny; and Rennes by Flybe. The ferry ports of St Malo and Roscoff are the nearest for those travelling by boat, although it is quite feasible to use the other northern ferry ports instead should you prefer. Drivers can find the village conveniently close to the N164. St Brieuc has a train station, making rail travel another possibility.
It's good news on the property front for anyone looking to buy in Brittany on a budget... because although the Côtes d'Armor is usually considered an expensive department due to its continuing popularity, the inland areas such as the locality of Kergrist Moëlou can offer some real bargains. At the time of writing, you can find a picture perfect holiday cottage close to the village on the market for under 100,000 Euros... but it probably won't be on the market for long!
