Lanrivain - a tranquil village

The little village of Lanrivain is pretty and tranquil, sitting sleepily among the fields, woodlands and waterways of central Brittany, in the department of the Côtes d'Armor. The village is typically Breton in style, with old stone-built, slate-roofed cottages and quiet streets.

Facilities on offer

Lanrivain, being not much more than a hamlet, has only fairly basic facilities, but it is conveniently close to several larger towns and villages where you can go for those big supermarket trips, or to access a greater choice of restaurants, entertainment and sights. However, sleepy and easy going as the village may be, Lanrivain does offer a good boulangerie (so you can enjoy the French ideal of delicious, fresh baked bread and pastries every day), a small general store, a bar and a bar/restaurant.

Life in the village moves slowly, until the Fest Noz des Femmes

Lanrivain's 16th century church is worth a visit, as it has an important statue of the Virgin Mary in bed, and an ossuary. Life in Lanrivain tends to move quite slowly, and provides a marvellous antidote to the hustle and bustle of the life that many people find themselves leading in the UK today. There is an exception, though, as the Fest Noz des Femmes, a festival of Breton dance, takes place at the end of each November, bringing music, colour and life to this normally cheerless time of year in a delightful celebration of Breton traditions.

Explore the Gorge de Toul Goulic

Just on the edge of the village lies the spectacular Gorge de Toul Goulic, where you can see massive rocks and a tumbling river which disappears and reappears quite magically, in a haze of spray, sparkling in the sun. This area is superb for walkers, with many rare and lovely forms of flora and fauna to be seen in this very special, unspoilt natural environment. Just a little further afield, why not spend a day or so at the fabulous leisure lake of Guerlédan, where there are many sports and water sports on offer?

Visit the seaside or mediaeval Dinan

Horse-riding is also popular in this locality, and there are good riding stables in Lanrivain itself. The beaches of the Côtes d'Armor are also easily accessed, perfect for family days at the seaside, and you can choose from lively resort towns with an abundance of entertainment or discover quiet coves where you can enjoy absolute peace. The Côtes d'Armor has a wealth of historic towns, such as the lovely, mediaeval Dinan, and also many small market towns where you can do the shopping in a relaxed, traditional manner, far removed from the quick, frenzied rush around the supermarket that most of us are used to!

How to get there

The airport of Dinard is an ideal destination for accessing Lanrivain from the UK, as it is within easy driving distance from the village. Dinard is served by Ryanair and Aurigny Air. Brest is also an option, being served by Flybe and Ryanair. The nearest ferry ports are Roscoff and St Malo, but all of the northern ferry ports are viable. The nearest of the large roads are the N12 and the N164, while the village is located beside the D8.
