For buying and selling property in Locarn
Locarn is a peaceful and pretty Breton village that is found in the Côtes d'Armor department. Although tiny, Locarn is actually a great location for a holiday or longer stay, as it offers an enviable tranquillity at home but also easy access to the most popular destinations of the region. The countryside around Locarn is quite remarkable, with expanses of wild moorland being home to many varieties of flora and fauna, and also offering pretty woodland and a legendary rocky gorge.
Locarn doesn't have a supermarket or much in the way of shops, but bread and basic goods can be bought in the village. There is also a bar where you can find drinks, snacks and all the local gossip! The houses are typically Breton, stone built and with grey slate roofs and often sporting blue shutters and colourful window boxes.
The Maison de Patrimonie is a very useful resource in Locarn. From here you can arrange guided tours of the area, exploring the Chaos du Corong Gorge, the moorlands and other local places of interest. You need to speak… or at least, to understand French for these, however.
Getting out and about from the village offers numerous options. The nearby village of Mael Carhaix is handy for shopping, and just a little further away is the bigger town of Carhaix Plouguer where there are greater facilities and plenty of restaurants to enjoy. Also nearby is the market town of Callac, whose market is held every Wednesday. Even if you haven't got a car, you can reach Carhaix or Guingamp by catching a small train that runs within about ten minutes walk of Locarn.
Although Locarn lies inland, it doesn't take long (about an hour by car) to get to the lovely beaches for which Brittany is famed. The Nantes Brest Canal offers another pleasant way to explore the area. If you have children, Carhaix has an adventure park which is bound to keep them happy for an hour or two!
If you want to fly, head for Brest or the little airport at Dinard. Brest is served by Flybe and Ryanair, while Dinard is served by Aurigny and Ryanair. Otherwise you can take the ferry to Roscoff or St Malo, or the train or ferry to Calais. The village is found on the D11/D20, with the N164 being the nearest major road.
In spite of the popularity of the department of Côtes d'Armor, property in and around Locarn can be found very cheaply. There are renovation projects still available, so if you want to do the work yourself you can really grab a bargain here. Currently there is a property on the market requiring complete renovation, including two hectares of land, for just under 65,000 Euros.
