Inland central Brittany, where the little village of Mael Carhaix is set, is not hectic and buzzing like the tourist centres of the coast, yet is within easy reach of them for days out. Mael Carhaix is a very traditional village, charming and unspoiled, where it is possible to live an uncomplicated life while enjoying excellent access to all the important towns of the region. The village is attractive and friendly, and lies in the typically gentle, pretty countryside of the inland Côtes d'Armor.
The village of Mael Carhaix isn't large, but it has some handy little shops which include a newsagents (you can get English papers but it's best to order in advance) a couple of boulangeries for the essential taste of fresh baguettes and croissants in the mornings, and a small supermarket where you can buy most of the basic provisions. There's a pharmacy and a post office too, so you certainly don't have to leave the village every day just to access the necessities of life. The little luxuries are also catered for, with a bar and a restaurant in the village. Of course, there will be times when you want to travel to a larger town with more facilities, but this isn't a problem as there are several nearby.
When you leave Britain for France you could be forgiven, perhaps, for occasionally feeling a nostalgic pang for the UK's favourite supper, fish and chips. Well, if you are in Mael Carhaix on Wednesday evenings you won't have a problem, as there is a mobile chippy van which turns up to bring you the taste of Britain that you miss!
In the centre of Mael Carhaix there is a large lake, surrounded by well cared for gardens. It's not just a pretty addition to the village scene, it's actually a great little outdoor leisure centre, with its inviting sandy beach and play equipment for the kids. The lake allows you to swim, sunbathe, fish, potter in a pedalo or just enjoy watching your happy kids at play!
Near the village there are a variety of sports and leisure activities you can try, and these include golf, horse-riding, cycling and sailing.
To reach Mael Carhaix from the UK you can fly to Dinard or Brest. Dinard is served by Aurigny and Ryanair, and Brest by Ryanair and flybe. Or you can travel by ferry to St Malo or Roscoff. If driving, you will find the town lying just north of the N164.
In general, prices can be high in the Côtes d'Armor, as the department is highly sought after for reasons which are obvious once you have been there! The coastline is glorious, the countryside beautiful, the culture exciting and colourful and the people welcoming... and I haven't even mentioned the food! For these reasons and more, buyers will always be ready to invest in property in this area. If you haven't got a fortune to spend, though, don't be deterred, especially if you are prepared to do a little imaginative renovation work. Villages such as Mael Carhaix, although not far from the sea, offer better value for money than the coastal towns, and if you keep a close eye on the market you may even snap up a real bargain.
