Mégrit - a Breton rural idyll

If you are seeking a peaceful Breton rural idyll, take a look at the lovely little village of Mégrit, in the Côtes-d'Armor department. Not much happens in Mégrit, but that is a large part of its charm as here you really can escape the hustle and bustle of UK life and lose yourself in the beauty of the French countryside. Of course, everyone needs access to supermarkets and activities sometimes, but there is no need to worry as Mégrit is within just a few kilometres of some well equipped towns and many of the top tourist attractions of the region.

Around the village

Mégrit is very typically Breton, with pretty, old stone houses and quiet streets. There is a lovely village church, once the hub of village life and still well patronised. The village is not much more than a hamlet really, but it does have an excellent boulangerie where you can find freshly baked delicious baguettes and other baked goods, and also a small general shop. There's a bar too, so you can enjoy a drink and maybe get to know some of the locals in the process.

Enjoy the activities on offer at the nearby leisure lakes

Mégrit is just a few minutes drive from the charming town of Jugon les Lacs, home to not one but two fabulous leisure lakes where you can enjoy various water sports and other activities, in addition to finding some good shops and a selection of restaurants serving tasty local fare. Only slightly further away is Dinan, one of the region's premier attractions. This gorgeous mediaeval town comes complete with ancient ramparts, half-timbered houses, quaint, winding streets and a colourful, bustling river port. It makes a great place to spend a day at any time of year.

Visit the coast

The coast of the Côtes-d'Armor is also within reach, and is famed for its glorious beaches, stunning walks and lively resorts. The capital of the Brittany region, Rennes, is also a fantastic city to see.

How to get there

The nearest airports are those of Dinard and Rennes. Dinard is served by Ryanair and Aurigny, while Rennes is served by Flybe. The best ferry port to head for if you want to sail is St Malo. Drivers can find the village of Mégrit on the D19, in between the N176 and the N12 Route Nationales (non toll motorways).
