Merdrignac is a charming market town that is located in the very heart of the Côtes d'Armor department in the ever beautiful region of Brittany. The town is a good size, and has all amenities, yet lies amid unspoiled rural landscapes and only an hour from the sea and the ferry ports. To make it all even more picturesque, Merdrignac has a lovely lake on the edge of town.
Merdrignac is a perfect location for those who want to get away from it all, yet retain easy access to the UK, and also to have all the facilities of a town available to take the hassle out of every day living. Merdrignac has great facilities, with all the usual quintessentially "French" shops such as boulangeries, patisseries and boucheries, as well as modern necessities such as banks, cash points and petrol stations. There are supermarkets too, for that weekly shop.
Wednesday mornings bring the delights of a French street market to town, and there can be few greater pleasures than strolling in the sunshine discovering all the sights, scents and flavours produced as the stall holders tempt you with their wares.
Brittany is a region with a proud and long established gastronomy, and fortunately Merdrignac has a number of good restaurants where you can explore these wonderful tastes and textures for yourself. Although Merdrignac lies a short distance inland, expect to find plenty of fish and shellfish on the menus, as nowhere in Brittany is far from the sea, and fresh seafood plays a powerful part in Breton cuisine.
Being set in full countryside, Merdrignac is a special place for fans of fresh air and outdoor activities. The town has a super open air swimming pool, ideal for cooling your heels in the summer months, and other sporting facilities include tennis courts, nearby golf courses, fantastic walking and horse-riding stables.
If you want to explore the wider area, you will need a car as Merdrignac has a very rural setting. That said, however, the town is only an hour or less away from all the major tourist attractions and natural beauty spots of the department. Days out at the seaside, days spent exploring gorgeous mediaeval towns such as Dinan, and days shopping in the fabulous ferry town of St Malo all slip easily onto the agenda.
To travel by air, you can choose to fly into Dinard, served by Ryanair and Aurigny, or Rennes, which has flights with flybe and Aer Lingus. Ferry travel is another good choice, as the port of St Malo is very close and the ports of Roscoff, Caen and Cherbourg also lie within a reasonable distance. Travelling by road, the town is found conveniently close to the N164.
If you are seeking a property in the popular Côtes d'Armor department you may expect to pay fairly high prices, but Merdrignac is something of an exception. With its inland situation the town offers some great bargain properties and an excellent standard of living, something that quite a few British ex-pats have discovered already.
