Moncontour is a very lovely mediaeval fortified village that is located in the north of Brittany, in the department of the Côtes d'Armor. Small in size but rich in interest and beauty, Moncontour never fails to fascinate with its ancient walls, buildings and a strong sense of its mediaeval past. The countryside that surrounds Moncontour is simply stunning too, with marshes, rivers, lakes, forests and rolling fields which form a truly enchanting backdrop.
Moncontour is classified as a "petite cité de caractère", which is not at all surprising given its history, and its mediaeval appearance and ambience. The village is full of buildings that call the Middle Ages straight to mind, being built in the colombage fashion with external timbers. Its narrow winding streets transport you to a bygone age whilst charming all who discover them. The village also offers an insight into its past through a museum and through its "fêtes mediaevales", which take place each summer and which provide not only a colourful and entertaining spectacle that the whole family will love, but also a great opportunity to experience a living history.
Moncontour has a good collection of shops and services, and many of these are artistically advertised with beautiful and characteristic signs hanging above the doors, depicting in true mediaeval style, the goods or services on offer! There is a bank, post office, hair salon, pharmacy, as well as all the usual French shops; a boulangerie, a boucherie, charcuterie and poissonerie. There is also a small supermarket and traditional street markets every week. Lovers of French food and dining out will delight in the choice of cafés and restaurants, which is excellent for a small town such as Moncontour.
There is a large leisure lake right on the doorstep, which offers a number of sporting activities including a water ski and wake board park, skate park and mini golf. There is also restaurant on site. It is the ideal place to relax, catch a few rays and perhaps even have a picnic!
Most sports and leisure activities can be found near the town of Moncontour, such as golf, quad biking, cycling, tennis, horse-riding... and there are many less strenuous activities on offer too, such as museums to visit, local specialities of food and drink to try, and beautiful towns and villages to discover.
If you want to fly, you can take a flight to Dinard, Rennes, Lorient or Brest. Dinard is served by Aurigny and Ryanair; Rennes by flybe and Aer Lingus; Lorient by Aer Arann; and Brest by flybe and Ryanair. Travelling by rail will take you to St Brieuc, and for those who choose to take to the seas, the nearest ferry ports are St Malo and Roscoff. Drivers will find Moncontour near the N12.
The Côtes d'Armor is often a somewhat expensive department when it comes to the property market, as it is very popular and its charms well documented. Inland towns and villages such as Moncontour, however, can be less expensive, although Moncontour itself is well known for its historical charm. Even so, you could be pleasantly surprised when you see what is on the market as there are currently some properties around at extremely reasonable prices.
