Plouaret - a legendary town

Plouaret, which is an historic market town found in the Côtes d'Armor department of Brittany, in the north-west of France, is a town with deep running connections to the many myths and legends that exist in this region. There are several curiosities found in and around the town, one being an unusual subterranean chapel which is claimed to have been made by God himself as part of the original creation! Plouaret lies in the green, rural land of inland Brittany, yet is just a stone's throw from the sea, providing the best of both worlds.

Amenities and services on offer

Plouaret has a lively atmosphere, and although never overrun by tourists, is a popular base for holidaymakers. The town has a useful collection of shops, including a couple of supermarkets, two restaurants (although these are open only at lunchtimes) and a handful of local services. Should you require more extensive shopping and service industries, these can be found in nearby Lannion. Tuesday is the day to be up early in Plouaret, as this is market day, when the town's streets and square come alive to the shouts and calls of the stall holders, and the bustle and chatter of the shoppers.

Visit Plouaret's sights and monuments

Plouaret has some interesting sights and monuments, and it is well worth taking a little time to explore these, ideally with the aid of a guide book which can explain the many myths and legends of the area as well as the historical facts behind the sights. The subterranean chapel is fascinating, as is the strange statue found just outside the town which depicts a half mermaid, half horse creature. Also to be discovered are some lovely manor houses, fountains and other statues, many of which have fantastical stories attached.

Near the seaside and mediaeval towns

It takes just quarter of an hour to reach the seaside, and just twice that long to get to the famous beaches and resorts of the Pink Granite Coast. The mediaeval town of Lannion is nearby, and offers history and culture in abundance, in addition to great shopping, dining and entertainment. Brittany has many lovely mediaeval towns to visit, with one of the best loved being the beautiful walled harbour town of Dinan.

The area is suited to outdoor activities

The countryside of rural inland Brittany is perfect for those who enjoy outdoor activities, so it is hardly surprising that walkers, horse riders, cyclists, fishermen, golfers and nature lovers flock to the area.

How to get there

To arrive by air, you can fly to Brest or Dinard direct from the UK. Brest is served by Flybe and Ryanair while Dinard is served by Aurigny and Ryanair. If you prefer to travel by ferry, the ports of Roscoff and St Malo are served by the excellent Brittany Ferries (Roscoff is the closer of the two), while the other northern ferry ports are all within a straightforward drive. If you are driving yourself, which is always a good idea as a car is necessary to make the best of the area, you will find the town on the D11. The nearest major road is the N12.

Property prices and availability in and around Plouaret

Although it is just a short distance from the coast, property in Plouaret is quite a bit cheaper than that in the coastal towns. Village and country houses of traditional Breton design are usually on the market at very reasonable prices, some with good possibilities for running gîtes or bed and breakfast establishments.
