The little village of Plougras is found in the countryside of the ever popular Côtes d'Armor department of Brittany, in north-west France. The granite houses, with their slate roofs and distinctive style of architecture are typically Breton, and the Breton language is still spoken by some of the older residents of the village. Plougras is a place to kick back and relax, somewhere to get away from the stresses and strains of modern life. If you are looking for a rip roaring nightlife, look elsewhere… but if calm and beautiful countryside appeals to you, this could be just the ticket.
For all its small size, Plougras has some useful small shops, with a boulangerie (excellent for those delicious baguettes and croissants), a general grocers which incorporates a small bar, and a restaurant. It's easy to access more shopping and other facilities in the nearby town of Plouaret, and here you will also be able to find schools, health services, banks and garages. While Plougras can hardly be said to be packed with historical monuments, there is an interesting church, dating from the end of the 15th century, and a 16th century chapel, both worth a look if you want to do a little sightseeing right on the doorstep.
Brittany has some of the loveliest beaches in France, and it only takes a short drive from Plougras to get you there. Along this stretch of the coast you can find anything from lively, sophisticated resorts to almost deserted coves, so whatever your idea of a perfect day at the seaside entails, you should be able to find it here.
The area is also rich in historic towns and monuments. Guerlesquin is very close to Plougras, and is an interesting town to visit, while Lannion is the nearest of the larger towns. Brittany is known for its standing stones or menhirs, and there is a very good example of these to be seen at Plestin les Grèves. A little further afield, don't miss the opportunity to visit the beautiful mediaeval port town of Dinan.
The area also offers numerous sporting activities, the peaceful countryside being an ideal spot for walking, horse-riding and cycling. There are several leisure lakes in the vicinity too, with swimming areas, beaches, sailing and fishing.
Fly direct from the UK to Brest or to the department's international airport at Dinard. Brest is served by Flybe and Ryanair, while Dinard is served by Aurigny and Ryanair. Ferry travel is a good way to get to the Côtes d'Armor too, with the ferry ports of Roscoff and St Malo being the closest. If you are driving, and as the village is rural a car is pretty much a necessity, you will find Plougras from the D42 after leaving the N12.
Properties on the coast of the department, or in the popular towns such as Dinan, can be expensive. However, prices in small villages such as Plougras can come as a pleasant surprise. Definitely worth a look as there are bargains to be had!
